So how strong is the jobs market really? As the US November elections approach, political pundits have been wrestling with an apparent disconnect between the public’s perception of the economy and its performance as seen by economists. Americans on the whole tell pollsters that they’re downbeat about the economy. But economists generally think it’s doing quite well – especially when it comes to the labor market.
New data from the government suggest that there may be something to the public’s unease: The jobs market may not be quite as buoyant as economists believe. The monthly tally on job gains last year may have been about 60,000 too high. That changes the picture of the labor market from one that was superhot to something more tepid. And it raises the risk that the Federal Reserve will overdo it in its effort to cool off the market without killing it.
