Northern Iowa man faces vehicular homicide charge after long investigation into auto accident

WEBSTER CITY - A Northern Iowa man who allegedly ran a stop sign while drunk driving and then crashed in a ditch, killing his passenger, is facing serious charges in the incident.

WEBSTER CITY – A Northern Iowa man who allegedly ran a stop sign while drunk driving and then crashed in a ditch, killing his passenger, is facing serious charges in the incident.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Dustin Humlicek, age 40 of Webster City, following a lengthy investigation on a September of 2023 fatal accident. Kevin Beightol, 48, of Webster City was fatally injured in the accident.

Humlicek (pictured at top in a jail photo) was charged with homicide by vehicle operating while intoxicated a class B felony, operating while under the influence 1st offense a serious misdemeanor and driving with a suspended license a simple misdemeanor.  A class B felony is punishable by up to 25 years imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to one year imprisonment and or a $2,560 fine, and simple misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of up to 30 days and or a fine of $850.

On September 2, 2023, at 3:03 A.M. Hamilton County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an accident with injuries. The caller reported they failed to stop at an intersection and the vehicle entered the ditch. The reporting party was also the driver of the vehicle.  A 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pick up was northbound on North Des Moines Street and failed to stop for a stop sign at 210th Street. The pickup entered the north ditch and came to rest in a residential yard.

Humlicek and the passenger Kevin Beightol, bboth from Webster City, were transported to Van Diest Medical Center by ambulance for their injuries. Both individuals then were transported by medical helicopters to Des Moines hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Beightol died later that day from his injuries.

Assisting the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was the Webster City Police Department, Webster City Fire Department, Van Diest Medical Center Ambulance, Iowa state Patrol and the Polk County Medical Examiner.
