College Football: Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz not going anywhere, plans to stay in job

IOWA CITY - After Iowa's abysmal offensive production the last few seasons, some Hawkeye fans have clamored for a change in coaching, but head coach Kirk Fernetz has no plans to follow his son Brian out the door.

IOWA CITY – After Iowa’s abysmal offensive production the last few seasons, some Hawkeye fans have clamored for a change in coaching, but head coach Kirk Fernetz has no plans to follow his son Brian out the door.

Coach Ferentz seemed somewhat bewildered and slightly confused about what to say to reporters this week at his weekly news conference when reporters began to grill him about the announcement from the athletic department that his son, Brian the offensive coordinator, would be terminated after the season.  Afterall, the Iowa Hawkeye offense had become the butt of countless jokes nationwide about its inability to score points, and much of it was self-inflicted by the team’s announcement that they must average 25 points per game or Brian would suffer consequences. Kirk Ferentz told reporters of the glory days in the 80’s and complained that he wanted to evaluate the entire team at the end of the season, and left some wondering about his own future.  However, Wednesday night, he attempted to clear up the matter:

“While my immediate focus is on finishing the season strong, I love coaching and my intent is to continue coaching here at the University of Iowa,” Ferentz said. “We have built something very special here and I plan to coach until I am no longer passionate about the game, players or coaches.”

So now, Hawkeye fans can be rest-assured, the team is stable moving forward, but still won’t score many points on Saturday versus Northwestern.  Unless it’s the defense.
