OBIT: Barbara Lubben

Barbara Lubben, 82 of Mason City, IA passed away on February 9, 2025 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Upon the family’s wishes, she will be cremated and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date in the summer.

Barbara Lubben, 82 of Mason City, IA passed away on February 9, 2025 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City.

Upon the family’s wishes, she will be cremated and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date in the summer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Parkinson Disease Association (https://www.apdaparkinson.org/) in Barbara’s memory.

Barbara (Lewis) Lubben was born on March 12, 1942, the daughter of Russell and Arloene (Clauson) Lewis. She attended Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1960. In the fall of 1960, she attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, after which she worked as business manager for orthodontists Dr. Oldham and Blodgett for 11 years in downtown Mason City. Later on, she worked again as business manager for Dr. Percival also in Mason City.

Barbara was married to Calvin Lubben in 1965 and to this union two children were born, Dawn and Chad. Barbara was known to many as the “Cake Lady” with her talents of making specialty cakes. She had over 125 cake molds for every occasion you can think of. She also mastered fresh strawberry and lemon meringue pies, which were always beautiful as well as delicious!

Barbara enjoyed for many years playing the trumpet in the Band Festival Alumni Band, and the many friends she met along the way in the Band and as being an active member of the Red Hat Society, the McDonald’s coffee group, and the Grandmother’s Club. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church in Forest City.

Barbara is survived by her son, Chad (Kristin) Lubben and granddaughters Colet(9), Norah(9) and Parker(4) of Cornelius, North Carolina; grandson, Cort Lubben of Minneapolis, MN; brother, Riley (Kris) Lewis of Forest City; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Matson of Mason City, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She is also survived by special friends Ruth Gordan, Nancy Raymond, Jeanne Schali, Myron Van Horn, and Lorraine Bohn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Arloene Lewis; her husband, Calvin; daughter, Dawn Lubben; brother, Roger, and special friend Lyla Van Horn.
