MASON CITY – A small Mason City house burned and officials are blaming a faulty battery pack for the blaze.

On October 6, 2024, at 10:42 PM, the Mason City Fire Department responded to a report of a fully involved house fire at 1211 S. Georgia. Upon arrival, the front porch was on fire, with flames extending into the main house through the front door and windows. Mason City Fire Department crews quickly extinguished the fire while performing search and rescue operations.

It was determined that all occupants were out of the house.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental.

While the investigation is ongoing, early findings point to an E-bike charging system that was plugged into an outlet and charging a battery pack. Additional testing and investigation of the E-bike will help determine the final cause.

The Mason City Police Department and Alliant Energy assisted at the scene.
