Albert Jackson Gilbert, 100, of Thornton, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. A private family graveside service will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. Counsell Woodley Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Thornton is caring for Albert and his family.
Albert was born April 11, 1923, in Austin, Minnesota, son of David and Ollie (Slowter) Gilbert. He attended schools in Forest City, Iowa. Albert served as a member of the United States Navy during the Second World War.
Albert was united in marriage to Marjorie Lorene Throssel and they spent over 63 years together. To this union, two children were born. Albert worked in agriculture most of his life; as a farmer and at Engebretson Grain in Thornton. He also worked at American Crystal Sugar Company in Mason City. Albert was the oldest member of the Thornton American Legion, lifetime and oldest member of the Pony of America Association, and member of the Texas Longhorn Association.
Albert enjoyed attending auctions, whether it be Texas Longhorn auctions, farm auctions or antique auctions. He loved his long-horn cattle. Albert also enjoyed fishing and was an excellent cook. He enjoyed dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake with his wife and eating at Northwestern Steakhouse in Mason City.
Albert is survived by his son David Gilbert of Swaledale; daughter Gail Cooper of Colorado; granddaughters Megan Gilbert and Kim; sister Lucille Proctor of Cresco; along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, brothers Bob Gilbert and Harry Gilbert, and sister Bernice Asbe.
