Merrill “Ed” E. Anderson, 92, of Clear Lake died Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Merrill “Ed” E. Anderson, 92, of Clear Lake died Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Concord Care Center in Garner.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St., Garner with Pastor Tedi Anne Hassapopoulos officiating. Inurnment will be at Concord Township Cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.

Merrill Edward Anderson, the son of John and Esther (Olson) Anderson, was born November 15, 1929, at Ventura. His childhood years were spent in the Ventura area where he attended school and graduated from Ventura High School in 1947. Ed continued his education at Buena Vista College where he played baseball for one year. He then played semi pro baseball in Duluth, MN, for one year where he faced many batters who went pro including Henry (Hank) Aaron, who played for Eau Claire, WI. After a year in the minors, he enlisted and played baseball for the Navy. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Viet Nam wars. After his honorable discharge, he was active in many of the area ball teams. On September 12, 1952, he married Betty Schisel at her parent’s home in Garner. After various jobs and locations, they settled in Clear Lake, IA. He was working at Iowa Mold Tooling in Garner when he retired. Ed was an avid fisherman and loved watching sports, especially baseball. He also enjoyed cards and cribbage games.

He was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Ed is survived by his wife, Betty; sisters-in-law, Donna Jean Schisel, Bessie Schisel and Linda Schisel of Garner; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maurene Coyer, Phyllis Jensen and Lois Hanson; and brothers, Carroll, Larry and Robert “Bing” Anderson.
