OBIT: Dorothy Sorenson

Dorothy Martha Sorenson, age 93, of Estherville, IA passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Thursday December 16, 2021.

Dorothy was born on October 20, 1928 in Killdeer, ND to Mike and Rose (Zelinsky) Hlebechuk. Dorothy graduated from Belfield High School in 1947 and married her high school sweetheart, Henry (Arnold) Arnold Sorenson, on September 23, 1948 in Belfield, ND. They were blessed with ten children.

Dorothy was a stay-at-home Mom until Arnold died on July 19, 1977, and then she became a Helping Angel working in Home Health and with hospice patients and their families. She met a lot of special people in this work and made many memories by touching the hearts of her hospice families.

Dorothy married Edmund (Ed) Peters on November 27, 1982. It was then that they purchased a property with many acres of land including a pond, apple, plum and pear trees, wild raspberries, and all of the great wildlife of Iowa. She loved her birds, deer, and turkeys. She was an active member of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church serving in The Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters, and as a Eucharist Minister. Dorothy was known for her homemade cooking, and she never turned anyone away from a home cooked meal, especially her pierogies and apple pies, which will always be her family’s favorites. She spent her Spring and Summer tending to her flower beds and garden and loved to can her harvest so she could share with all her children. When Dorothy couldn’t be outside, she loved to sit in front of the TV knitting items for her children and grandchildren. She cherished every moment she got to spend spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren and soon got the nickname Saint Dorothy from the grandchildren’s friends due to the kindness she showed everyone from her heart.

Dorothy had the opportunity to travel around the world with Ed, and her fondest memories were her yearly trips to Hawaii, making new friends from Iowa and South Dakota.

Dorothy is survived by her children Henry (Lana) Sorenson, Rosemarie (Jeff) Croner, Dr. Margaret Sorenson, Michael (Cindy) Sorenson, Mark (Stacy) Sorenson, June (Wayne) Neal, Karen Kelloway-DeMuth, Annette Dalen, grandchildren Hohn Sorenson, Lee Sorenson, Jessica (Kevin) Cherland, Lindsey (Brandon) Andrews, Mekala (Jon) Johnson, Andy (Amy) Sorenson, Shelby (Jeremy) Olson, Colby (Sarah) Sorenson, Kelsey Sorenson (Christopher), Grant (Ashley) Rawlings, Amanda Rawlings, Madison (Tanner) Holland, Pete (Danielle) Kelloway, Nathan DeMuth, Haley Dalen (Nate), Logan Dalen (Emilee), 18 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Charlotte Hlebechuk, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Arnold and Ed, children Gary Sorenson and Christine Rawlings, brothers Walter, Albert and Edward, and sister-in laws Kathryn, Martha, Marvel and Lucille.
