Panther women’s basketball opens at home against #9 Iowa

CEDAR FALLS – The Panthers will play their first regular season game at the McLeod Center on Sunday afternoon.The game will be a test for the Panthers who will take on the number 9 team in the nation, the Iowa Hawkeyes.

After getting a win on the road against St. Louis University 63-54, the UNI women’s basketball team returns home for the first time in the regular season. The Panthers come back to play an in-state foe in the 9th ranked Hawkeyes. In their last matchup during the 2020-2021 season, the Hawkeyes beat the Panthers in Iowa City 96-81. Tipoff for Sunday’s game is set for 2 p.m. at the McLeod Center.

THE PANTHERS:
– The Panthers have their first game at home this season on Sunday afternoon against the #9 Iowa Hawkeyes. Last season the Panthers had a winning record at the McLeod Center of 7-5. The Panthers have never had a losing season at home since the McLeod Center opened in 2006.
– The last time the Panthers faced Iowa at home, UNI was able to take down the Hawkeyes 88-66 in 2019. That game also set an attendance record for the program at the McLeod Center.
– The Panthers have won 7 games against Top 25 teams while being unranked in their history. The last Top 25 win for UNI was on December 12th, 2020 against South Dakota State in a 65-48 win.
– In their game against St. Louis, the Panthers had four players scoring in double figures while guard Bre Gunnels contributed a double-double.
– Guard Karli Rucker led UNI in scoring against the Billikens with 17 points, shooting 7-12 from the field, 1-2 from 3-point range, and 2-2 from the charity stripe.

THE HAWKEYES:
– The Hawkeyes have won their first two games of the season against New Hampshire and Samford. Both games were won at home by an average scoring margin of 40 points.
– In the Hawkeyes game against Samford, every player that stepped onto the floor was able to get at least a rebound in the stat book.
– The Hawkeyes have two Preseason Player of the Year candidates in Monika Czinano and Caitlin Clark. The two average 22.5 and 17.0 points per game respectively.
– This is the first time in 25 years that the Hawkeyes have been ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Top 25 preseason poll. The Hawkeyes are currently 9th in the AP Top 25 poll, and were ranked 6th back in 1996-1997.
