FAYETTE COUNTY – An Iowa woman is guilty of homicide by vehicle – reckless driving after authorities alleged she was texted while driving when she ran over and killed a Northern Iowa teen on a moped.
A guilty plea was entered by 27-year-old Kelli Jo Michael back in May in a case in which she was texting while driving and struck a moped driven by 14-year-old Kaiden Estling of Maynard, Iowa back on June 28, 2018 in Fayette county. Michel fled the scene while Estling perished due to her alleged negligence. She has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, must pay $157,438.98 in court costs and restitution, and a suspended fine.
There also appears to be a civil lawsuit filed in the matter against Michael that is pending in court.
I am a delivery driver and I see people on their cell phones every single day. Going off the road crossing the center line and I pass them and they are still on their phones like no big deal!

She should have paid more attention to Clint Thomas.
It’s too bad Judge Nicholas Larson let a pretty blond teenager get by of the same offense with a simple one-year probation in Mitchell co several years ago. That teen should have faced the same sentence as this woman, but ya know those pretty little girls with blond hair don’t deserve to have their life affected by real punishment for their crimes.

Neither skin color, age, gender, etc should be at play when it comes to paying for one’s crime.
