MASON CITY – A man toting drugs who fled a Mason City traffic stop back in April got only probation and a fine for punishment.
On April 24th, 2020 at 11:40 PM, a Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a 2006 Buick Lucerne being driven by now 37-year-old Jason Olando Thorson of Mason City, near the intersection of 2nd Street and N Monroe Avenue. Thorson refused to stop and attempted to elude law enforcement. The pursuit continued northbound on Monroe from 2nd Street NW, west on 12th street NW and then south on North Van Buren Avenue. Speeds reached 45mph over the speed limit in his attempt to elude law enforcement. Thorson then exited his vehicle and ran on foot but was apprehended shortly after. No injuries or vehicle damage occurred during the vehicle pursuit. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Mason City Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
Thorson was charged with eluding, a class D Felony; operating while under the influence – drug related, a serious misdemeanor; interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor; driving suspended, a simple misdemeanor; and two counts of failing to obey a traffic control device, simple misdemeanors. Thorson was also held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a Winnebago County arrest warrant for parole violation.
On April 25th, 2020 a search warrant was executed on the vehicle being driven by Thorson. Methamphetamine and marijuana were located in the vehicle. Thorson was additionally charged with two counts of 3rd offense possession of controlled substance, both D Felonies and possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor.
Thorson finally pled guilty to only first-offense operating while intoxicated and two counts of D felony third offense possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to a suspended 5-year prison term, 5 years of probation and $1,437.50 in fines and court fees.

It is no wonder we have so many criminals on our streets. The police arrest them and the Liberal Judges turn them loose.
I’d say the entire system is flawed and needs to be re-invented. The American Way is to criminalize/stigmatize everyone so they have a record and can be discriminated against. More jails, in my opinion, is not the answer.
