Winnebago River cleanup held in Mason City

MASON CITY – The Winnebago River was cleaned up by volunteers this weekend.

A river cleanup float was held on the Winnebago River on Saturday, August 5 from 9 AM to noon in Mason City. This float was open to the public. Volunteers could bring their own canoes or kayaks as well. The 2.5 mile float began at East Park and ended at Averydale Access on Birch Drive.

Volunteers enjoyed a beautiful stretch of river, picking up trash along the way.

This event was sponsored by the Mason City Earth Day Committee, Mason City Active Living and Transportation Commission, and Lime Creek Nature Center.

While this group did a good job, I talked to some people that live along the river on E. State St. and when they went down to the river Tuesday there was Styrofoam, pop cups and old clock and a blue bowl just off the water line.

Did they pick up the trash? Hope so otherwise they are part of the problem.

I didn’t ask them if they picked it up. Wether they picked it up or not is not the point. The point is, the people that were involved with picking up the trash, should have done it. But just like you, when walking down the street and see trash, you walk on by, thinking why should I pick up other peoples trash. But then again, there probably wasn’t any cameras there.

I would love to ride a wood paddle I hope I can catch a few slivers in my ass!! Give me the Wood!!!

Thanks volunteers for cleaning out the river. Back in the 60’s my neighbors pulled about six Stingray bicycles from Willow Creek under the footbridge. Seems like they put together three bikes from the parts and rode them for years.

Saturday August 5th? No wonder not too many people showed up that date isnt around for another 4 or five years.lol

What a fantastic group of people that volunteer for this not so fun activity. Hopefully M.C can figure out a way to utilize the Winnebago river for tourists activities similar to what Charles City did with the Cedar and Kayaking.
Thanks again to all those caring people taking care of the Winnebago..

What a positive impact for MC. Hats off to these people.

How about a cleanup of the pathetic stream running under the walking bridge by the library. it was rather low last weekend and you could see quite a few things in the water and mud, a riding lawn mower and a whole lot of old bikes that the majority of are probably reported stolen over the years. be willing to bet there is a whole lot more in that water between the old sids building and where it runs into east park.

So get your butt down there and start cleaning up. Don’t let everyone else do the work you see needs to be done.

Agreed! But you gotta understand that it takes little or no effort and not much brain power for some of these keyboard comedians to bitch and moan all day. Thanks to those volunteers who give s;

And dont let the paddle hit him in the ass on his way down to volunteer!

Shove that paddle up your ass you, you overbearing asshole.
