Mason City Shopko will lose its pharmacy

WEST DES MOINES — Hy-Vee, Inc. announced on Friday that it has acquired the business of 22 Shopko pharmacies including one in Mason City. Shopko patient files will merge into existing Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations in the 17 cities where the acquisitions have taken place.

“As we continue to grow our pharmacy business, we pride ourselves on providing an excellent experience to our customers,” said Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman of the board, CEO and president. “We provide customized care for each person who walks through our door. Our pharmacists will go above and beyond to provide numerous services to our patients so we can help them understand and assist with caring for their specific health care needs.”

All impacted Shopko pharmacy patients will receive a letter from their new Hy-Vee Pharmacy with additional details.

On Janunay 23, 2019, Mason City Hy-Vee Drugstore located at 875 Fourth Street SW will begin taking over the pharmacy business from Shopko.

In addition to traditional pharmacy services, Hy-Vee Pharmacy locations feature free prescription delivery, automated refill ordering, immunization services, free blood pressure checks, private medication consultations and a registered dietitian available for nutritional consultations. Generic prescriptions are available for $4 for a 30-day supply or $10 for a 90-day supply.

There are also published reports that state Shopko may be preparing to file bankruptcy. Bloomberg reports that “The general merchandise chain, owned by Sun Capital Partners Inc., could still reach agreement on an out-of-court restructuring, but that scenario looks increasingly unlikely … the situation remains fluid … with no guarantee that a court filing will happen at all.”

Shoot!!! What a disappointment and I was only 2 years away from getting the monthly senior discount!

I shopped there, on average, maybe once a month. Thought they had one of the better garden centers in the area. Have noticed that they seemed to have cut floor staff in the last few years and finding help was an issue.

Unfortunately, this is the tip of the iceberg according to analysts.

Leveraged Buyouts have added so much debt to companies, that eventually they cannot overcome it. It played out like that for Toys R Us, Bon-Ton Stores, and others.

For those waiting in the wings such as J C Penney and Sears, debt has put a noose around their necks, their revenue cannot support it. Shopko appears to be no different.

I always liked their Pharmacy but I see all the signs of the store closing… shut down jewelry counter and customer service, same old merchandise and hanging on to old seasonal/clearance items to try and get the last dime, store manager is moving, etc. It will be sad to see it close, like Sears, Penneys, Younkers, etc.
