NIACC soccer matches canceled today

MASON CITY – Due to the possibility of severe weather Tuesday afternoon, the NIACC men’s and women’s soccer matches against Lake Superior College have been canceled.

Both teams were slated to play their home openers Tuesday.

The NIACC women’s team (1-0) returns to action Friday at Hesston College in Hesston, Kan. The Lady Trojans will also play Saturday at Hutchinson CC in Hutchinson, Kan.

The NIACC men’s team (1-0) plays Saturday at the Missouri Valley College junior varsity. The Trojans also play Sunday at East Central College.

The NIACC men’s and women’s home openers are now slated for Wednesday, Sept. 5 against Iowa Lakes.

The NIACC men’s team opened its season with a 4-0 nonconference victory over Southeastern CC in Burlington in Leo Driscoll’s debut as the men’s head coach. The Trojans received goals from Lewis Saunders, Awais Abed, Jake Pitney and Kalle Kantelinen.

Recording assists for the Trojans in the season opener were Aidan de Boer, Saunders and two from Aleksander Trujic.

Matthew Janke collected nine saves in goal for the Trojans.

NIACC topped Lake Superior College 3-2 last season in Duluth, Minn.

Notes: NIACC has an all-time men’s soccer record of 140-151-13 … NIACC is 1-0 all-time against Lake Superior College … Kantelinen has six career goals … Saunders has five career assists.

The NIACC women’s team opened its 2018 regular season with a dramatic 4-3 win over Southeastern CC on Saturday in a non-league contest.

The Lady Trojans won the contest with 28 seconds remaining as Jessica Altman scored the game-winner on an assist from keeper Rose Priestly.

Altman scored two goals for the Lady Trojans, one on an assist from Priestly and the other on an assist from Emma Eden.

Eden scored on an assist also from Priestly and Michaela Elford scored on an assist from Rylie Smith.

It was the second straight season that the Lady Trojans won their season opener. The Lady Trojans topped DCTC 7-2 in the 2017 season opener.

NIACC topped Lake Superior College 3-0 last season in Duluth, Minn.
