FORT DODGE – A person on a motorcycle suspected of a crime was chased by police in Fort Dodge this morning, leading to a fatal crash into a mailbox and a tree.

On Monday, August 8, 2016 at 3:07 AM, Sergeant Dan Charlson with the Fort Dodge Police Department observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of 7th Avenue North and North 15th Street. The motorcycle turned west onto 7th Avenue North and proceeded to 9th Street where Sergeant Charlson activated his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the driver over. The driver of the motorcycle then turned north and accelerated refusing to stop.

Sergeant Charlson continued northbound as the motorcycle was attempting to elude a law enforcement vehicle. As Sergeant Charlson approached the area of the 1700 block of Williams Drive, he observed that the motorcycle had left the road striking a mailbox and tree on the west side of the road. Sergeant Charlson immediately called for medical units to respond to the scene, where the driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead.

The name of the driver is not being released at this time pending notification of family.

Traffic investigators with the Iowa State Patrol have been called in to investigate the collision. Also assisting were the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Unity Point, Webster County Medical Examiner and Fort Dodge Fire Department.
