MASON CITY – A Mason City woman arrested for stealing two bottles of vodka from a local grocery store has been sent to jail.
Mason City police were called to Hy-Vee West, located at 2400 4th Street SW, on the afternoon of November 2, 2015 after a report of a shoplifter. Officers arrived and after an investigation, arrested 45-year-old Christie Lee Smith on a charge of theft in the third degree due to past convictions. Smith attempted to steal two bottles of vodka worth about $47 total, police told NIT.
Smith eventually entered a guilty plea to the charge of third-degree theft. She was sentenced to 365 days in jail with 305 days suspended. She must pay $365.00 in court fees and submit a DNA sample, as well as serve 2 years of probation.
Smith has been charged with numerous crimes over the years, with many of the charges dismissed. Some of the charges involved the manufacture and sale of methamphetamine, felony theft, and more. She did plead guilty in July of 2015 to enhanced third degree theft, a charge brought by Mason City police. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to pay $431.25 in court costs and fees – a fine was dismissed. She is in jail now, serving both of these sentences, apparently concurrently.
