North Iowa man caught stealing at Fleet Farm jailed for a week

MASON CITY – A North Iowa man who was found guilty of meth possession this year has been sentenced to jail after a theft from Mills Fleet Farm.

A theft was reported by loss prevention employees at Mills Fleet Farm, 3200 4th Street SW in Mason City, on Sunday, January 24 at about 11:24 AM. Police arrived and arrested 33-year-old Richard Joseph Helfrich of Coulter, Iowa. He was charged with fifth-degree theft and taken to the county jail.

Helfrich was later found guilty by a judge and sentenced to 7 days in jail. He must also pay $300.00 in court fees and surcharges.

Helfrich is a convicted felon for drug crimes in Washington county, Iowa.  In April of 2015, he was charged in Butler county with possession of methamphetamine. He was found guilty on January 6, 2016 and put on probation. After his guilty plea to the theft crime, Helfrich is now accused of violating his probation. He will face an August 10 hearing.
