Two men charged after car collision and leaving the scene

cerro gordo county sheriffs officeMASON CITY – Two men were charged after a weekend car collision outside Mason City.

On July 16th, 2016 at 2:54 AM, Deputies from the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a collision at the intersection of 300th Street and Killdeer Avenue in Cerro Gordo County. Upon arrival, Deputies found a pickup on it’s top in the ditch, unoccupied. Deputies searched the area for any occupants but were unable to locate anyone. Deputies attempted contact with the owner, but were not successful.

Contact was made with the owner, Sam Velau, 52, of Garner on July 18th. Velau sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident. He turned himself in to deputies at the Cerro Gordo County jail. He was arrested for driving while barred and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He posted bond and was released.

The driver of a second vehicle involved in the collision, Gunner M. Bransfield, 18, of Northwood had also left the scene prior to deputies arrival. Contact with Bransfield was made later that day. Bransfield was uninjured. Bransfield was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, no valid insurance and failing to obey a stop sign.
