The City Council of the City of Mason City, Iowa, met in regular session pursuant to law and rules of said Council, in the Mason City Room of the Mason City Public Library, at 7:00 P.M., on June 18, 2019. 10. 28E with County Social Services for the Justice Coordinator Position: Motion, Adams; 2nd, Masson that Resolution No. 19-152, authorizing renewal and approval of a 28E agreement between the City of Mason City and County Social Services MHDS Region (CSS) for the implementation of a Law Enforcement Mental Health Care Coordinator Position, be adopted. Discussion followed regarding resources for mental health problems in the community. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Continue Public Hearing for Kraft Heinz Foods to July 2, 2019: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor called for comments and objections. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Masson; 2nd, Jaszewski that the public hearing be continued to the Council meeting to be held at 7:00 p.m. on July 2, 2019 at this place and that action on the Resolution entitled “Resolution approving and authorizing execution of a development agreement by and between the City of Masson City and Kraft Heinz Foods Company” also be deferred until such meeting. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Reject all bids for the “2019 Sidewalk Program Project No. 19-1004”: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor called for comments and objections. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Jaszewski; 2nd Thoma that the bid be rejected. Questions followed regarding the reason for the high bid. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Vacate Public Utility Easement in Stanford Subdivision: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor called for comments and objections. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Adams; 2nd, Thoma that Resolution No. 19-153, authorizing vacation of the south 183 feet of the 15 foot public utility easement lying within and abutting the west property line of lot 7 in the Stanford Subdivision, be adopted. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Acceptance of Public Utility Easement: Motion, Symonds; 2nd, Thoma that Resolution No. 19-154, authorizing acceptance and approval of a public utility easement from John R. and Christine L. Ressler for the North 5 feet of Lot 6 and the south 5 feet of Lot 7 in Stanford Subdivision, be adopted. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Utility Rate Adjustments: Motion, Adams; 2nd, Thoma that Ordinance No. 19-5, amending the City Code by repealing Title 6 Chapter 1: “Public Utilities”, Article A.: “Water Rates”, Section 1: “Rates and Charges Established”, Subsections A and B (1) in their entirety, and adopting new Subsections: A and B(1) in lieu thereof, be adopted. Casey’s general stores is looking at going automated with some self check outs and ordering food. They claim shortage of labor. I would say shortage of wages is the issue. This is an issue with many companies- not providing a living wage. Your thoughts?

At the rate that construction project is going, it will never open. Why do things take so long to happen in Mason City, Iowa?
It is not scheduled to open until November. They are building the Spirit Lake one now, followed by Esterville, then Mason City.
They already stated it with “pay at the pump”. Moving it inside is the next step.
As far as the wages, there are plenty of people who SHOULD be willing to work for what the pay but unwilling to as it is beneath them to work at a convenience store. Plus, they would have to change out of their pajama pants, miss the Lifetime Channel’s movie marathon, and miss out on the government check they might not get if they started working.
The “living wage” people are under the impression that you should make enough per hour working 20-30 hours a week at McDonald’s to live on. Sorry folks, 40 hrs is a full time workweek. Get a 2nd job, there are plenty available.
