MASON CITY – A dog was apparently beaten to death Wednesday evening at the hands of a Mason City man wielding a hammer, who was arrested and charged with several crimes.
According to Mason City police, on June 3, 2015 at about 9:21 PM, Mason City Police were called to the 1400 block of South Harding on a report of an injured dog. Upon arrival, officers located a boxer mix with head injuries. After further investigation, officers arrested 62-year-old George Harrington of Mason City for violations of animal codes; failure to have current city license (a simple misdemeanor), failure to have current rabies vaccination (a simple misdemeanor), and animal torture (an aggravated misdemeanor).
The dog was transported to a local veterinarian where it was euthanized due to injuries on its head caused from a hammer. Harrington was transported to the Cerro Gordo County jail and held on $2,000 bond.
