Iowa inmate who sexually abused child and liked to study the bible dies

IOWA CITY – A man serving prison time for sexually abusing a child has died.

Steven Ralph Helfer, an inmate assigned to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center died Friday April 3, 2015 at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Helfer died of natural causes, Encephalopathy.

Helfer was serving a 25-year prison sentence for a conviction out of Black Hawk county for second-degree sexual abuse. He had been arrested in August of 2006 for abusing a 7-year-old girl and sent to prison on February 26, 2007.

According to his obituary, Helfer had worked for the Clayton County Health and Zoning Department as a Public Health Sanitarian and Zoning Administrator. “Steven liked music, travel, and Bible study.”
