MASON CITY – Sophomore Jason Kay led four players in double figures with a season-high 15 points as the NIACC men’s basketball team topped the AIB Junior Varsity 89-48 Tuesday night in the NIACC gym.

Kay, who prepped at Mason City, was 6 of 12 from the field, including a 3 of 6 performance from 3-point range.

Mike Udume and Constan Minla both scored 12 points and Conor Lang scored 11 points as the Trojans completed the season sweep of the AIB Junior Varsity. The Trojans also topped the Eagles 85-76 on Nov. 13 in Des Moines.

“We played pretty good defense,” NIACC coach Mark Mohl said. “We’ve been stressing defense in practice and if we can get them to buy in defensively, we can have a pretty good year.
“We’ve been telling them if they communicate on defense, it makes you quicker. We still had some breakdowns but our effort was much better.”

Sophomore Braxton Williams, who scored seven points, grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds with five steals and three assists. Freshman Trei Mitchell led the Trojans with five assists.

Sophomore Conor Lang, who scored seven points and connected on one 3-point goal, moved into a tie for 10th place on NIACC’s career 3-point list with 94. He’s tied with Master Irvin, who played for the Trojans from 2005-07.

The Trojans have won nine straight games at home dating back to the 2013-14 season. The last loss by the Trojans on their home court was a 95-75 loss to Kirkwood on Jan. 8, 2014.
NIACC (8-5 overall) returns to action Wednesday in a nonconference contest at Riverland Community College. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. wtih the men to follow at 8 p.m.

“We’re coming off a good win,” Mohl said. “Anytime you do that you want to get back on the court as quick as you can. Riverland is very good. We will need to give a great effort to stay with them.”
