Man wanted since 2012 for assault pleads guilty

MASON CITY – A man who punched out another man over two years ago finally pled guilty to the crime and was in jail this week serving his sentence.

According to Mason City police, on April 1, 2012, at 2:31 AM, a male victim reported he had been assaulted in a downtown bar by 34-year-old Fernando Benitez. Officers were unable to locate Benitez so they applied for an arrest warrant charging him with serious assault.

In February of this year, Benitez was located and brought to jail on a warrant, only to post bond and be released the next day. After initially pleading not guilty, Benitez finally came clean and admitted guilt when he pled guilty on August 13. He was sentenced to two days in jail and ordered to pay $693.25 in fines and court costs.
