NIT – Forced purchase of health insurance. Drones. IRS prosecutions. Washington gridlock with sold-out politicians. Big government is here and doesn’t seem to be going away soon.

Americans recognize big government as the most serious threat to the country, a new poll shows.

Answering a question that has been posed for 50 years, Gallup said that seventy-two percent of Americans believe that big government is a greater threat to the U.S. in the future than is big business or big labor. The prior high for big government was 65% in 1999 and 2000. Big government has always topped big business and big labor, including in the initial asking in 1965, but just 35% named it at that time.

According to Gallup poll of a random sample of 1,031 adults from all 50 states that was released this month, a record low of 5% say that big labor is the most serious threat, while 21% named big business.  No more than 11% of Americans have chosen big labor since 1995, clearly reflecting the decline of the labor movement in the United States in recent decades.

Democrats are more likely to be concerned about big government when a Republican is president, just as the same is true for Republicans if a Democrat is president.  Republicans are more likely to view big government as a threat due to their reluctance to rely on government to solve problems.
