Motorcycle hit on 4th Street and South Illinois today

by Jody Spear and Kelly Meyer –

MASON CITY- The Mason City Police and Fire Department responded to a call of a motorcycle and car accident at 4th Street and South Illinois Thursday afternoon around 2:40 pm.

It appeared to be a hit and run at first, but the elderly male driver came back to the scene within ten minutes. An officer at the scene was questioning him.

The motorcycle driver wasn’t seriously hurt, but did have some pain.

The Police Officers were concerned with the traffic and made every attempt to quickly move the incident out of the way to prevent any further accidents.

No more information was available at the time.

MCPD questions a man who returned to scene of motorcycle accident.

Like I said, get a life.

“As for bikers being inconsiderate, self-centered, ego-maniacs who don’t care about the impact they have on Mason City…that is an ignorant and immature judgement based on YOUR experience.”

What do you call people who disturb the peace and knowingly break the law with impunity? What do you call people who act in such a manner, so as to arbitrarily offend sensibilities at the expense of others? Exactly what right does a person have to intrude upon others, to punctuate their lives with unnecessary noise?

That is not a singular judgement, but goes against the expectations of society. They call it respect, something most people learned in Kindergarden.

Mr. “Observer” Can you stop quoting every single person who says something that is against what you think! its getting annoying and it just keeps the drama going! and i agree with you bikeRN i think the same way. oh ya and one more thing …mr “observer” DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT QUOTING THIS!

“Or go complain to someone who cares and could help you out with this absolutely HORRIBLE problem of yours. Is your quality of life really this affected by motorcycles? You are really CONSTANTLY interrupted?”

With the exception of commercial vehicles, I would qualify the percentage of a 24 hour day as being 75% during the warm months. In fact, there are many commercial vehicles that are quieter than many motorcycles.

I speak towards quality of life taking into account many places where I have lived, where my expectations were set. In Mason City, the bar has been considerably lowered in comparison..

“I feel bad for you if you are SO upset about this that you feel the need to continually come back to this page and tell everyone that they are wrong. Your life sounds really hard.”

I come back to these pages to make a point. My life is no harder or softer than anyone else’s outside of my own doings. However, it is the expectation that no ones life should be adversely affected by so few in society.

Public debate over community issues is important given the desire for our community to succeed, add jobs, and prosper. This is one of those important elements that defines a growing society. Something which everone here desires (and in some cases, demands). One cannot have their cake and eat it too. Thus, you must decide what is more important, a noisy, lawless community, or one that investors find appropriate to invest in?

WOW!! I can’t believe the comments about bikers on here. Some people seem to be lumping ALL bikers together. “Weaving through traffic as if there were no laws. Most bikes have no mufflers. Most are ridden by inconsiderate, self-centered, ego-maniacs. Like criminals, they don’t care about anyone else but themselves. They don’t care if your telephone call is interrupted. They could care less if you were sleeping before they went by and woke you. The could not care less about their impact upon the quality of life in Mason City.” So should we lump ALL cage drivers together? That you feel protected in your car, so you don’t pay attention to what is going on around you, so you don’t see or hear the bikers (hence the loud pipes/no mufflers). You say you use a blue tooth while driving…so you admit you’re on the phone..you then become instantly distracted. Your FULL attention is not on driving! Weaving through traffic…I know I have! Usually it’s because some inconsiderate, distracted driver just swerved into my lane and I had to WEAVE to avoid being hit! Because I don’t have loud pipes YET, so they didn’t see or hear me! As for bikers being inconsiderate, self-centered, ego-maniacs who don’t care about the impact they have on Mason City…that is an ignorant and immature judgement based on YOUR experience. I’m pretty sure every single patient I have ever cared for would tell you I’m considerate, caring and the care I give impacts Mason City and their life in a POSITIVE way. Be careful of the judgements you make about a group of people…for all you know one day you may find a girl giving you or your loved one CPR and saving your life…she just might be a BIKER!

“I agree those bikers will break you in a second if you told them what your telling us now!”

Violence is always the best way to improve a community. It’s alays good when a minority decides upon the quality of life for the majority.

“No one deserves their lives constantly interrupted by such unnecessary noise and dangers.”

Thought I’d go ahead and quote YOU and then complain about it, since that’s what you are doing to everyone else. Observer, maybe you should move if you don’t like it. Or go complain to someone who cares and could help you out with this absolutely HORRIBLE problem of yours. Is your quality of life really this affected by motorcycles? You are really CONSTANTLY interrupted? I feel bad for you if you are SO upset about this that you feel the need to continually come back to this page and tell everyone that they are wrong. Your life sounds really hard.

Get off your high horse, Observer.

“Get off your high horse, Observer.”

The horse I ride is a Shetland pony, so shoot low. I realize that we are all humans in this world. There is no halo circling this head. I also realize that we are cut from many cloths. Yet, I find in all of that, there is a certain middle ground of civility we all must abide by, or suffer as a society.

I was not kidding when I said that such noise is offensive. A person has a reasonable expectation from intrusive and unnecessary behaviors. Intrusive is key since, it goes beyond normal expectations, and there is no way to filter it out.

Then consider the fact it is illegal. Examine Iowa Code 321.436, taking into account Iowa Code 321.277 and 321.277A. You will notice as I have, those behaviors go away when a Police vehicle is in sight. Thus, there is a preponderance of illegal action (if you act that way when no police are present, and exactly the opposite when they are).

Last, that you choose to perpetrate such behavior upon everyone around you, gives the indication you do not care about anyone else. What appears to be more important is the assumed right to violate everone’s sensibilities with impunity.

It is not the choice of everyone to have to hear it, it is the choice of the persons or persons who create this disturbance. We must live with your choices, through no fault of our own.

Im so disgusted by some of the comments on here. Some should be ashamed of themselves for saying he deserved what he got. How dare you!!! That motorcyclist is my uncle and he is a very kind hearted individual who would do anything for someone so for people to make very hurtful and rude comments like that is crazy. No one deserves to be hit whether on bike or in car. I do have to laugh at the comment where bikes shouldn’t be on the road. A majority of bike accidents are caused because a car hits them, so maybe cars shouldn’t be on the road then. Come on get real. . People just need to be more aware of their surroundings. It’s not that hard.

Ok just for you people who are saying that he is a bad motorcycle driver and that he deserved to be hit…that is my best friends dad you are talking about. That is totally rude! Maybe instead of saying mean things you should be thinking about the fact that you don’t know anything about him and he didn’t “deserve” anything like this. that is total bull crap and you should be glad that he didn’t get seriously injured or even DIE! Is that really so much to ask for? if you’re gonna post on this at least think about how it will effect other people before you do it.

I would like to invite anybody here who is dissing bikes to go to Sturges or a Make A Wish ride and tell anyone of those bikers that they dont deserve to be on the road. I am sure you would all be REAl tough there wouldn’t you? Go find yourself a life and worry about your own problems. You dont like motorcyles? Fine, dont get one. There ARE responsible riders out there. ONE BEING MY FATHER. Plenty of people who drive cars are terrible drivers. Go find something else to bitch about.

I agree those bikers will break you in a second if you told them what your telling us now! I dare you to go up to a big buff biker and say that this motorcycle driver deserved to be hit on his bike and that bikers shouldnt be aloud on the roads! That bike could mean the world to that man! and that old man took part of his world away from him for no reason!

“Motorcycles have a right to be on the roads!”

While that is true, and I am sorry for what happened in this incident, I ask for folks to spend a day near U.S. 65 and IA 122 and observe the mayhem. The you can see why such comments come forth.

You could hear the noise two blocks away. A group of three females last night drag racing. Two mindless types leaving from a stopped position opening the throttle all the way out for two blocks straight. Weaving through traffic as if there were no laws. Most bikes have no mufflers. Most are ridden by inconsiderate, self-centered, ego-maniacs. Like criminals, they don’t care about anyone else but themselves. They don’t care if your telephone call is interrupted. They could care less if you were sleeping before they went by and woke you. The could not care less about their impact upon the quality of life in Mason City.

And people in town then wonder why bikers have such a bad reputation? Look upon the fraternity. Blame those of your own kith and kin.

Actually, I DON’T see why such comments are coming forth, Observer. Frankly, I am APPALLED that people would post such rude and horrible comments when my father could have lost his life. I am appalled that no one can say “Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt” and all they can do is complain about something completely off topic. It sounds to me that you are basically saying “Sorry, BUT he’s a biker and I’m annoyed by bikers.” There should be no “but” in this situation. My father was doing absolutely nothing wrong. He was not weaving through traffic. He was not speeding. He rides a bike with a muffler. He is NOT inconsiderate or self-centered. The topic of this article has nothing to do with anything you just talked about. I’m sorry you have had a bad experience with several motorcycle drivers. Perhaps next time you have drag racers near your home or see someone driving irresponsibly, you should contact the authorities. I disagree that “most” motorcycle drivers are the way you say they are. While there are some irresponsible motorcycle drivers out there, there are plenty of irresponsible car drivers as well. I don’t think this is an appropriate place to voice your concerns. I’m a little upset that the only quote you chose to reply to was mine, while others on this website are saying my father deserved to be hit by a car. Seriously? He deserved to get hit by a car? That is an extremely cruel thing to say. And those who think that should be ashamed of themselves.

There was never any ill will meant against you father on my behalf. What was written pointed out what is observed on a day in-day out basis. They are feelings many people have.

As you say, your father is the exception to the rule. Yet, the comments I made were to point out what exists, and hope for self-policing within the Fraternity. I am usually the first to raise a flag when I see one painting with a broad brush, what was written however,is quite factual.

No one deserves bodily injury, no matter if by accident, or premeditated. In the same light, no one deserves their lives constantly interrupted by such unnecessary noise and dangers.

Are you upset because your telephone call was interupted while being passed by a motorcycle? Hang up and drive you jackass.

You say you raise a flag when you see someone painting with a wide brush? Your not even painting with a brush you appear to be using a spray gun. The comments you made were some of the most ignorant ones on here. And there are lots of them. “Most bikes don’t have mufflers”? “Most are ridden by inconsiderate, self-centered, ego-maniacs. Like criminals, they don’t care about anyone else but themselves.” You have generalized most motorcycle riders into this category. It appears to me that the ones with the loud pipes are the ones you see. Those are the ones your not running over. Sounds like I should take my mufflers off. You are a total dumb ass.

“Are you upset because your telephone call was interupted while being passed by a motorcycle? Hang up and drive you *******.” [sic]

To the contrary, every time I get a call while in the car (which is rare), I use a blue-tooth device. Most cases however are whilst sitting outside.

We observed three bikers this at 0645 hours this morning getting gas. Why they had to rev up their bikes to full throttle while parked at the pump is beyond normal understanding. That I later found out they woke up guests at a hotel because of that act, just serves to point out their narcissism and anti-social tendencies.

“You have generalized most motorcycle riders into this category. It appears to me that the ones with the loud pipes are the ones you see. Those are the ones your not running over. Sounds like I should take my mufflers off. You are a total dumb ***.”

I have a six hour video that says otherwise. It shows all traffic at the intersection on U.S. 65 and IA 122 East. Thus the brush used was appropriate.

Given my history here, you really don’t think I would write something unless I had reasonable proof do you?

you know what annoys me is those damn loud trains through are beutiful town

Clearly all the people that think the motorcycle driver was speeding or went through the light before it changed to green or whatever you think that makes him look like the bad guy, seriously needs to get your facts straight! The guy on the motorcycle is INOCENT and should not be blammed. He was the victim that an old man has caused. The old man is cleary guilty, and if you dont believe me why dont you ask all 9 witnesses! If you think that the motorcyle driver was the one that went through the light before it turned green wouldnt you think that the light on the other side of the road (the road the old man was on) would be green and other cars would be driving through not just the old man? and like other people said why did he keep driving if he was innocent? wouldnt you think you would stop if you felt and seen that you hit someone? Just like the little girl in Northwood the guy kept driving and it turned he was not suppose to be driving because he was in a way disabled. Maybe just maybe this 78 year old man has some disablity too. Like i said before get your facts straight before you open your mouth and blame inocent people for actions they havent done. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

I think you should be blammed. Lol!

Anonymous – you are obviously a real dumbass, just putting that out there. And for – Not a slave to fashion, you are an idiot too if you think that an orange vest would have helped this old man see him better….he couldn’t see the RED LIGHT what makes you think an orange vest would have been better? You people really need to get some education on the subject before making such comments….I am just in awe of your stupidity. This was my brother in law and he has been riding a motorcycle for years, he knows how to be careful on one……this was not his fault! Oh and did you even read the report the OLD MAN who hit him left the scene and didnt even know he had hit him….WHATTTTTTTTT really???????????? Seoiusly people this driver was negelgent clearly…..now do you really want to continue talking about something you have no clue about and continue making an ass out of yourself? Go ahead we expect it….

I firmly believe bikers should have to wear blaze orange vests like hunters do. Or some color that colorblind people can discern. I think that would save lives. Or how about this: Yellow helmets. Sorry ABATE!

I firmly believe you don’t work for the marketing/merchandising department of harley davidson.

biker deserved what he got. probably took off before the light turned green, then complained about being hit.

Is there a game that bikers play? Does that game include the rule “If you put your feet on the pavement at a stop sign/light, somewhere god kills a puppy” because that seems to be the theme around town.

Excuse me, “Anonymous”, check your facts before you post something so ignorant. That biker is my father, and the phone call I got last night saying he was involved in a hit and run accident was one of the worst phone calls I have ever received. How dare you say he got what he deserved. FYI, he did not take off before his light turned green. The driver of the car ran a red light. You can ask the numerous witnesses. While you’re at it, why don’t you ask the driver of the car why he sped away leaving the scene of an accident if he wasn’t guilty. Motorcycles have a right to be on the roads! If people would put down their cell phones, follow traffic lights and signs, and PAY ATTENTION to vehicles around them, maybe we wouldn’t have so many accidents.

That is total bull crap you have no idea what happened and don’t make accusations about people that you don’t know and btw he didn’t go before the light turned green.

Really “Anonymous”. You don’t even know the whole story, so I wouldn’t be running your mouth. That would be my friends dad you are talking about and trust me…I don’t appreciate that comment. How would you like it if you got a call saying your father was in a hit and run accident? Wouldn’t feel so good would it? I’m just saying that maybe you should put yourself in his shoes or in his family members shoes before running your mouth about this situation.

As a older driver I can tell you that bikes are sometimes very hard to see. Some bike riders do not remember this and ride way to fast and pass on the right. Not saying this was the case at all. It sounds like the car driver just didn’t see the bike rider and that should tell you something. No matter what anyone says, riding motorcycles is more dangerous than driving a car and I know a lot of people who quit riding just because of that. I am one who quit. Just not worth getting killed or hurt over. Now if any of you idiots want to proof read this get right at it.

A man has to know his own limitations !!!

The bike was at a stoplight his light turned green…..he was just starting to proceed the car RAN a RED LIGHT…..no speeding involved on the bike driver’s part…..not seeing the red light was the driver of the car’s first mistake he would have hit whatever was in his way in that intersection including a pedestrian…oh did I mention after he hit him he took off…..yeah pretty negelgent.

You made your choice to quit riding for your own safety that is fine. Life is full of people that do things that may be risky but that is what makes life worth living. Should we not have people climbing Mt. Everist or riding a rocket into space(Thankyou Neil Armstrong)driving anything on the road is dangerous and people will continue to die and no matter what they are traveling in it will be a tragedy. I have been ran into, hit and run and almost ran over by cars and yet we let them stay on the road.

For all of you morons out there this involved one of my family members. You have no idea who was driving the bike and how it even happened. The driver in the car was the one at fault. Get your heads out of your a$$e$ before you spew your venom on the subject you know nothing about. OLD MAN left the scene……just sayin….watch what you are doing….pay attention this could have been very serious! THANKS for all of your concerns.

Reely. I agree, people need to get a life. I also like how you mispelled things. At least I hope you did it on purpose. Ha ha.

Obviously this bike didn’t have loud enough pipes or this never would’ve happened.

The old man probably couldn’t see the bike going way too fast over the steering wheel. Both of them shouldn’t be allowed to drive anymore.

I guess the bike going 5 mph taking off when he got his green light is just way too fast? If the driver of the car couldn’t see a RED LIGHT over his steering wheel, that’s a problem.

Its a problem because I don’t like bikers or old people.

Damn southend drivers!

The north end SUCKS.

Welcome Peter Children supporter! You’re really late to the game but pull up a chair. What other great words of wisdom do you have for us?

I like you. 🙂 Have a great day.

Oh man I bet they forgot their camouflage today!
Thanks NIT thats what makes you so unique!

I am concearned with The pictures on here and how they are obtained. I drove by this incident and was passed by a vehicle with a woman hanging out the drivers window taking pictures. Mind you her vehicle was still moving and she “WAS” the driver. We are so concearned with distracted drivers but it is ok to do this for a picture of a parked ambulance or some police officers talking to someone? Does NIT pay people for pictures? Does NIT condone this type of behavior?

If your so Concearned you might want to spell CONCERNED right!

“you’re”

I was east bound on 1-22 and I saw NIT photographers across the street at kum & go parking lot taking pictures. There’s many people who snap pictures of incidents.

I think your a globe cracker! The photos clearly show the direction these photos were taken from which seems to confirm Trolls comment. GO AWAY GLOBE nobody likes your accusations.

I don’t get it. It appears to me there are alot of people with way too much time on thier hands. I have seen alot of stupid people doing stupid things with cameras in there hand. I don’t know if the pictures are coming here or what and don’t really care. “Cracker” just because someone has a question or disagrees with NIT they are from the Globe? “i failed 4th grade too” your comment is so much smarter? “wow” who had to tell you it was mispelled? “CM” How do you know the motorcycle was going way too fast? I ride a bike and I’m pretty sure if he was riding fast and got hit by the car he would have had some severe injuries not “have some pain” as the article so eloquently put it. “Concearned” yep distracted drivers are everywhere. All I can say is defensive driving skills.
