Summer reading program offers diverse learning opportunities

MASON CITY – Readers of all ages will explore the night this summer as Mason City Public Library presents “Dream Big…READ”, Own the Night” and “Between the Covers” during their 2012 summer reading program. The program will run from June 11th – July 20th.

Children will explore topics like nocturnal animals, space and dreams through stories, crafts, music and other activities. The 2012 children’s summer reading program, “Dream Big…READ” is open to young people, birth through 5th grade. Join in the fun with performers, prizes, story times, craft mornings and much more! There will be night-themed story times and book clubs in the Mason City Room each week, Craft mornings on the MCPL lawn every Thursday from 10:00AM – 11:30AM and weekly contests in the Children’s Room. The Zoo Man will be kicking off “Dream Big…READ” on June 11th at 10:00AM and 1:00PM on the MCPL lawn. Iowa Public Television’s Dan Wardell will be bringing his 2012 Reading Road Trip to the MCPL on July 9th, with performances at 2:00PM and 3:00PM in the Mason City Room. Todd Von Ehwegen from Lime Creek will bring the Star Lab to the Mason City Room on July 18th. Registration will be necessary for this event. Children’s musician Hans Mayer will help us celebrate the end of the summer reading program on July 19th, with performances at 10:00AM and 1:00PM in the Mason City Room. All special events except for the Star Lab are first come, first served. Children will keep track of their reading and earn prizes as they fill up their reading log. Participants who complete their log by July 20th will be awarded a book and will be invited to a special pool party at the Mason City Aquatic Center. Children who complete their logs will also be entered in the grand prize drawing of their choice for a chance to win a Kindle, a Leap Pad, a VIP Movie Party at the Library and many other fantastic prizes.

The young adult portion of the program, “Own the Night”, will include crafts every Tuesday evening from 5:30PM – 6:30PM in the MPCL Classroom and Tech Thursdays every Thursday beginning at 2:00PM in the Mason City Room. Teens (5th grade – 12th grade) will keep track of their reading and win prizes as they fill up their log. There will be a weekly contest in the Young Adult area and volunteering opportunities all summer long. The Supernatural Research Society of Iowa (SRSOI) will have a program for teens and adults on June 12th from 5:30PM – 6:30PM in the Mason City Room. Participants who complete their reading log by July 20th will be awarded a book and be invited to a special pool party at the Mason City Aquatic Center. Teens that complete their logs will also be entered in the grand prize drawing of their choice for a chance to win a Kindle, a VIP Movie Party at the library, an HD video recorder and many other amazing prizes.

Adults (18 years and older) will be able to participate in “Between the Covers” at the Mason City Public Library. The first 100 registrants will receive a themed book bag, pen and writing journal. There will be three Weekend Workshops throughout the program, all held in the Elizabeth Muse Norris Classroom from 1:00PM – 4:00PM. Quilting Adventures with Jan Ebert will be held on June 16th, Cheri Peterson from CP’s Scrapping will show you how to create at 4th of July mini scrapbook album on June 23rd and Altered Book Art with Joyce Colombo will be held on July 21st. Participants may sign up when they register for the program or any time up to a week prior to each event. Space is limited. On June 30th from 1:00PM – 3:00PM, John Henry will provide a tour of his working printing press at Cedar Creek Press. Registration is necessary and space is limited. On June 14th, actor Duffy Hudson will present a dramatic reading of John Steinbeck’s classic, Of Mice and Men. This event will be at 2:00PM in the Mason City Room. Registration is not required and you do not need to be signed up for the summer reading program to attend. There will be prizes awarded throughout the program, including Cabin Coffee certificates, Between the Covers t-shirts and grab bags of theme-related prizes. The grand prizes, chosen from all non-winning entries, are two $25.00 gift certificates to Book World.

The Mason City Public Library summer reading program is free and open to all. Registration from the Children’s and Young Adult programs begins June 4th at the Youth Services Desk or online at www.mcpl.org. Registration for the Adult program begins June 11th at the Main Circulation Desk.
