Take a look at the criminal records of the people that work there then you will understand. Sickening, surprised they haven’t lost more business yet. Ask the manager where he gets his employees from. Better yet, ask him what kind of charges his employees have, it’s a lot worse than drug dealing.
I had heard from someone that Soutbridge is looking to add a soft play center in the mall for kids? Had anyone else heard this? I think this would be a great idea to get families with children to the mall. Several large malls have these and are very popular.
A “for sale” sign is a better investment.

All you have to do is apply for a license to operate and get a liqueur license if you want to sell alcohol…if you don’t serve alcohol then you just have to obey the law…can’t operate your business within 1000 feet of a school, church or residence.

I will have to admit that I have enjoyed this site for some time now. While I do not always agree with Matt’s views or the fact that he allows senile old men and dopers to write “op eds,” I will say thank you for challenging the status quo. With that being said I feel that if this was truly a news agency who wished to awaken North Iowa and bring about change they would do so- not simply see this as a revenue source. While $2 per month is not an excessive amount, I feel having to pay for the stories produced is just feeding into the money=media ideology. Matt please do us a favor- refund those who have paid, make your operating money off of advertisers and keep asking the tough questions. Putting a dollar amount on content makes you no better than those whom you regard as corrupt politicians.

Also what news agency do you know that does not need to worry about their revenue source to grow their business beyond what it is today? I don’t know do you work for free or close to it? Why don’t you start your own news site and “bring about change” yourself? Lofty ideas now how about you go pay for them yourself? I can’t imagine how many hours it took to get this NIT business going and how many it takes to keep building it the way it is going. I’m not a fan of the sculpture idea but this guy is covering it well by interviewing the artists, etc. What other media source do you see working this hard? I am done blogging this topic not because you are wrong or I am . The point I am making is HOW I FEEL. No one is every going to change my opinion on how I feel. If they wanted me on a jury I would make it very clear how I felt before they ever chose me because I know I would not be a fair juror. I could easily say nothing sit on a jury such as this and not say anything and try and hang them not really caring if they are Innocent or not. I would never do this because I would be just as bad as the guy that would do something like this. It would be awful to put an innocent in jail because of my hate for molesters!! So believe or not I do have a heart just a very strong hatred for molesters!!!

Did you notice that the Democrats nominated the present President of the United States? That’s a big deal. Did you also notice that NBC carried a football game because they were contractually bound to do so according to their agreement with the NFL? Can you tell what were the 2 channels carried the RNC and what are the 6 who carried the DNC?
So they nominated the president, no big deal. The channels that carried the RNC was CNN and MSNBC. The channels that carried the DNC was CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, and I can’t remember the 6th but I did count 6. As for NBC maybe they did show a game but on my channel guide it said DNC. The 6th was IPTV.
All of the stations you mentioned carring the DNC carried the RNC but not all of it. At 9 pm ABC and CBS switched coverage to the convention as they did with the DNC. You seem to be trying to make a big deal out of nothing.
When the RNC started it showed it on 2 channels on my guide so I watched it on CNN, if it came on later on the other channels I didn’t see that, but at 7:00 it was only on 2 channels.
To Observer….. I stand by what I said!!! If YOU have a child a man or woman abused them tell me you wouldn’t want them to burn in hell but much worse before they got there!! Well, a child has a right to live a happy healthy life and when someone like these people take that away, then Hell is to good for them!!!!!! Everyone has rights. Even perpetrators of crimes. Once a person is convicted of such a horrible thing like that, it behooves society to remove him or her from circulation in one way or another. Be it prison, or a long term mental health facility.
However, I don’t believe in the death penalty, nor any cruel or unusual punishment (in accordance with the Eighth Amendment’s prohibitions).
Society must decide that if the punishment requires a facility, that we will fund them. The consequences are that without adequate space, they will roam the streets, largely untreated.

Did you all see that Judge Weiland sentenced Harold Stinnett, Jr., to 15 years total in prison for probation violation and Class C felony burglary? No probation, no deferred judgment and the sentences run consecutively instead of concurrently. I’m amazed. Maybe she is getting the hint.
He was originally charged with 1st degree burglary for attacking somebody in their own home. In Iowa that is a forcible felony carries a 25 year prison term with no less the 17.5 years served before parole. The Globe failed to mention it was plea bargained down by the CA’s Office and approved by Weiland.
This guy has multiple felony offences fro theft, burglary, violence, meth delivery. He will be back in 2-3 years doing the same thing. In California he would be a lifer on the 3 strikes law.

Well that is a switch compared to what I’ve seen at Caucun Mexican Restaurant. I’ve had it happen a couple of times where the managers daughter (maybe 10-12 years old) was the one who took my money at the cash register. The last time I was there I paid with a credit card and felt very uncomfortable with some kid running it through. Some might think its cute, but I don’t. I have not been back since then either.
I can’t say enough about how happy I am that Clear Lake lost to Forest City AND my son was actually playing for Clear Lake in the game.
It’s about time these pretentious parents and coaches got a shot of reality. My wife and i were disgusted by their behavior in the stands. Not to mention the team of coaches led by Freddy Boy. With 15 coaches, you would think they would be better prepared. And can somebody tell me why Pat Carney and Kurt Mueller are on the sidelines? Let it go guys. Your kids have been gone for years. You look ridiculous on the sidelines of a high school football game. Carney doesn’t even carry a camera anymore and I will bet my paycheck Muellers camera isn’t even charged!! But they are part of the Possey I guess.
As for the parents, what a bunch of whinny babies. Be a parent!!!!!!! It’s your kid’s time to shine. Just because you were a below average athlete or an ugly overweight cheerleader wanna be in high school, you need to get over it.

As for Freddy Boy and the Possy…….what a bunch of ex third stringer losers who get off on acting tough to a bunch of teenagers. You coach in North Frickin Iowa!! There is a big world outside of Clear Lake and you would all be laughed at as coaches. You have one state title in all of these years but even worse, your players don’t like you or respect you or your assistants. Do you consider that success?
I was not at the game, but am from the Forest City area and I would like to send a huge kudos to the Forest City Indians!! I heard it was a great game but never heard about the behavior of some of the Clear Lake fans. I hope it wasn’t witnessed by any kids, that sure wouldn’t be a great way to show good sportsmanship. I have seen parents behaving badly at games and it is pretty pathetic!! I saw a student umpire throw a misbehaving parent out of a game for heckling her and the other umps…it was her own father…that little girl got a standing ovation!!
Mueller was an average football player in Hampton in the early 80’s. He’s just trying to relive his glory days. Probably needs to buy a ticket and sit in the stands.
Thank you for your comments Reality Check. Your comments are a breath of fresh air that needed to be said by someone. I too have noticed this from the Clear Lake parents at football games. It really hasn’t changed much over the years. They revel in victory and can’t give credit to a team that beats them, they blame the Ref. for one bad call or another.
I too have always wondered why they have so many coaches on the field. They have as many as the University of Iowa.
I was surprised that they are letting Fred coach this year after his deal, bad message sent to the kids I think. But I will also commend him for his comments to the press after the game. He pretty much stated that they got beat by a better team. He didn’t through the kids under the bus.
Agree with you on FC beating CL but you go a little overboard when you start name-calling. There are many immature adults out there and, yes, they act like idiots at times – one of those times being high school athletic contests. But you come off much like them in the opposite way. It was a good football game, FC deserved to win. Fred’s posse is so large because of the respect he has from many people for his abilities to build and preserve a football program in little old North Iowa. And he has the respect of people all over the US for his skills – he is asked to assist in clinics and camps all over the country. I am not from CL; I know Fred has alienated some people there and that is nothing that concerns me. We all make enemies and we must live with that. But his players-your kid and others-went out there with the intention to win-as they do every game. Too many parents complain when their team loses and want to blame someone. One team has to win, one team has to lose. Sometimes the ball bounces one way, other times it bounces the other way. Get over it. It is just a game.
Bodacious, I don’t think I complained at all about the loss or the team not playing hard. But perhaps you should explain this great coaching staff that Fred has put together to help the kids do their best. Let’s see,we have a dentist, an insurance salesman, a Garner cop, all of whom have never coached. That’s 3 people that we can do without. And by the way, 2 of them don’t even coach, they just dress like the other coaches and stand there. As for this great respect that evidently the entire country has for Fred, that’s interesting since the only place it doesn’t exist is in Clear Lake. Obviously you are a friend of Fred’s because you failed to adequately address the main issue of my comments which were the parents. So your ending statement to “just get over it, it’s just a game” doesn’t make sense in the context of what I wrote. Regardless, these parasitic appendages to Fred’s back side need to buy a ticket and get in the stands. This would make them look better and perhaps Fred would earn some of that respect locally, that you refer to. It gives too much of an appearance of the Good Ol Boys club when all of his buddys are down on the field. Hmmm, perhaps you’re one of them????
OK guys, truth be told I am not one of Fred’s posse. As a matter of fact, my allegiance in any Forest City/Clear Lake game lies with FC. I have watched these two schools go at in many different sports and not once have I rooted for Clear Lake. My point is that you guys don’t respect Fred’s coaching ability and I think that is wrong. He has produced winners wherever he has gone. His wins/losses speak for themselves. I was somewhat surprised when FC beat CL Friday, but the seniors at Forest City have beaten the seniors at Clear Lake in almost every game they have played since 7th grade. They are better football players. I was very surprised the CL supporters didn’t whine and find excuses for their loss. The parents, for the most part, are good people. But there is a group of them who will find an excuse for everything. And those people I don’t like or respect because people remember them more than the good ones. I may have misinterpreted what your intent was and gone off topic for a bit, but in no way do I condone the behavior of that group of parents. I do wish CL the best of luck the rest of the season. Fred’s posse has nothing to do with respect in any way, shape, or form. It only has to do with middle aged men wanting to be “seen” down on the field and thought of as a person that has to do with any kind of success the program has. To think any different only means you are naive.

Until we have city ordinances in place with tougher consequences, this would be difficult to enforce by a city staff member’s warning alone. Discussion with council about this matter is recommended as I believe they are pursuing this matter. We have a neighbor that runs a business out of his yard, partially sided house, windows missing, junk all over and he has been fined a large amount of money for this. Years later, the blight remains, with a terrible decline of the neighborhood’s appearance. Either he does not think his yard is a disaster or does not care. Writing ordinances will anger people and others will welcome it. Property values plummet when people lack pride in neighborhoods. You can’t dictate how people live. It is sad they just do not have more pride, whether they rent or own. No one has to be well to do to maintain a property. I find the attack on Pat Otto very inappropriate even though your comments on the city’s appearance very true!
Yet when I mention the problem(s), there is nothing but silence. It is a formidable issue for the City.

Update. I took the problem to the gentleman with the shooting problem. It started hot but his better half I mean smarter half was quite shocked and told him if she sees him with the gun its going to get stuck where the sun dont shine. She told me later she was wondering where the squirrels she had been feeding all went to and felt terrible about it. As to glad I dont live there one bad apple can ruin any neighborhood so look around yours.

I just checked plot maps from NWS and Intellicast. The area is under a “Fire Weather Watch” til Thursday evening. Winds and heat combined with dried crops and grass are a cause for concern. Conditions are ripe through most of the Mid-West, Western Plains, and up into Canada.
Why does it seem every neighborhood has to have the nut case who shoots everything that has the unfortunate luck of crossing their property. Birds, squirrels, dogs, cats and you name it. Live by one now that the pellet qun is constantly going off. It would be nice to tie him to a tree for free potshots to see how he likes it.
I suggest calling the police any time he does it. Also have sympathetic neighbors do the same. After the first few calls, if nothing changes, call the PD and ask for a meeting with the community officer or a shift commander.
Shooting animals within city limits is against the law. It is also a risk to people living around there, property, and pets. It’s your neighborhood, you should be able to live there without concern for safety!

Actually, City Assessor is an odd hybrid. He sort of works directly for the taxpayers and has his own taxing authority to fund his ofice. There is a separate line on your property tax bill for the assessor. The look on the Council’s faces when they learned they really didn’t control him and that it would actually cost the city’s taxpayers more money if they eliminated the City Assessor and rolled it into the County Assessor’s office was priceless. I have had DirecTv for some 8 years. I know quite a few people who also have it and I have gotten $300 off my bill for signing up 3 others. (that is $10 per month for 30 months). I have never heard of them charging $85 per box. My charge is $4.95 for 3 of the 4 boxes I have (one is free). I think she must have read her bill wrong. I do know that when you sign up you usually get a bunch of stuff for free for awhile and that if you don’t cancel the free stuff (HBO, cinimax, stars, showtime, NFL Sunday ticket, ect) your bill can get very large. I would never think of changing back to Mediacom, even if they gave it to me free for a year.

This was a GREAT EVENT for the children and I absolutely love it that they used Monroe Park. A week agao some churches also put on a very nice event in Monroe Park. It was great to see all of the children and even their parents having a good time up in the crime ridden North End. My little neighbor girl even won a bike. Boy was she excited. The more of these typesof event we have the better. The punks won’t come around when there are enough good people out.

I have advised the Y top not make any statements and ignore all questions. It worked for years in the Catholic Church. I took my 12 year old son. The crowd was nearly all junior high aged kids and younger. I didn’t see anyone causing any problems. Bow wow’s show was perfectly appropriate for the age group in attendance. He made several comments to the kids about staying out of trouble and respencting parents/teachers. I was very impressed. As far as the “meet n greets”…they were referering to them as “vip badges”. they did not tell the kids that they were for anything other than a keep-sake. when one of my sons friends was upset about not getting to go backstage with the badge we went back to the guy(from bow wow’s group) that we bought it from and he gave my sons friend his money back. my son wanted to keep his anyway. all in all it was a great night for the kids–thank you north iowa youth center!
I have been to the Surf many times when the artist signs autographs and pictures can be taken after the show for FREE. Usually this takes place either at their merchandise table or in the Surfside Cafe. I think it was in very poor taste to charge the kids $20 and they couldn’t even get an autograph or a picture taken with him.

Well media com has done it again. if you do not have a digital TV you are not getting channels. you have to get a adapter for your TV. they did this today with out telling any one that it was going to happen. so now we who just have the lower 23 channels have to go out and buy anew TV just to use the adapter. No local channel until I come up with a few hundred dollars to buy anew tv

I am not able to get DTV due to the trees in the yard. Cannot cut down or trim as they are in the area between the street and sidewalk. I checked with the city and they told me not unless they were full of bugs or dead could I remove them so I either just go with the basic channels with an antenna or pay for shit from mediacom I cant afford to get a new tv just because of them.

DirectTV comes in handy during heavy thunderstorms with possible tornado sightings, ice storms, and blizzards. It automatically goes into a searching for signal mode because it can not communicate with the satellite on the other side of the clouds.

You idiot I think YOU have a comprehensive problem! When I said the dispatcher has a “Harsh” voice I meant that its obvious that she is sick and can barely talk. You would know what I meant if you had a scanner you idiot! or maybe you wouldn’t understand.
Radio systems used by the PD, and others, are far different than the types you use to listen to them. First off, it has been my observation that the fidelity of the radios the officers use is pretty good. Thus what may be hard to understand for you using for example a Uniden receiver, may not be an issue for those using the Motorola’s.
Most officers here also use speaker-mics, which are placed to aid in hearing others and Dispatch. If working properly, they do produce a good quality audio.
My suggestion is to use a speaker for your receiver. Often times, they will produce a far better audio than the built in one in the radio. An amplified pair of computer speakers is best as you can balance the input from the radio to the speakers, and adjust the volume on the speakers. Usually it will produce near FM quality audio.
You would be surprised the difference.

What is up with people getting arrested for public intox only? Not drunk driving or open container but just plain being drunk. Where do they find these people at all times of night and day? And what is up with an open container charge? In the old days they would empty your can out and send you on your way, now you get arrested and get a $300.00 bond. Seems ridiculous with all the REAL problems this town has.
Please Dee enlighten us all to what the REAL problems are, what the REAL crimes are.

What she fails to understand is, when laws are not enforced, an attitude pervades a community that one will only get a slap on the wrists. As a result, more and more instances of lawlessness occurs, and a community becomes impossible to manage.
Mason City is no longer Mayberry. Crime in all communities large and small must be dealt with in the same measure. Society demands it. We are hoping our community leaders get that message loud and clear, elsewise, we will never grow, prosper or become successful. And yes, it is more of a priority thant statues in Central Park that will become nothing more than targets for pigeons to soil.

Bow Wow performed on the Disney channel during their inaugeration special for President Obama. Put on a great show which was clearly intended for a young audience. I’m pretty sure he is capable of an age appropriate show. I also saw he performed in 2011 at DisneyLand. I applaude the Youth Center for promoting a show to benefit kids.
This show is terrible and R rated..why the Surf allowed this? I thought they had this credo of family performances…..HAHAHAHA

Went to Rue 21 yesterday with my daughter. It seems they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel for employees. We were greeted by some goth looking girl with piercings in her lips, face, and who knows where else. I also noticed another employee with a bunch of facial piercings. I am not a prude, I have a couple of tattoos, and I think the little nose studs are quite cute. But when it comes to gauges, septum piercings, lip piercings, it’s all just gross.
Also the store is constantly dirty and a mess and the clothes are so cheaply made after a couple of washings they are ready for the garbage.
Won’t be going back. I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere.

I always figured that those people with all the decals, cartoons, tattoos, brandings, bolts, spikes, key-rings & hula-hoops were mad at their father and trying to prove they were something other than how they are projecting themselves to the rest of us. What a waste of good skin.

We are working alongside the North Iowa Event Center to bring to North Iowa premier concert talent. We do not book heavy metal/rap performers.
We have read some remarks here that simply were not true. The Event Center,Dennis Higgins,and David Green have bent over backwards to supply us the information we need. They have never stated we had demands that they couldn’t meet. The opposite, they have been great to work hand-in-hand with.We are all excited to see our efforts working towards a common goal.
This Event Center is not about a board or a new business trying to help out. It’s about the COUNTY,the cities and the people. When people slam the fair,fairgrounds and volunteer boards, and they haven’t volunteered or donated themselves, they have nobody to blame but themselves.
Does the Event Center need our help..YES
Will they accept our help…YES
so why not help.
My business has been a party to many negative remarks alongside the Event Center. I learned long ago that being negative is easy, turning something positive is work. North Iowa will soon see the tally of work that Dennis,David and ourselves have put into the effort. Then I hope attitudes will finally change. We can only hope.

wendy—he did the inaugeration in 2009 and disneyland in 2011. you don’t have to like him or go to the show. but I’m sure the north iowa youth center has ensured that the show will be appropriate for kids or they wouldn’t have hired him. I’m sure Disneyland made sure the show was age appropriate too.

Agree! Wonder what type of crowd is going to show up at this one. Better yet, what are they going to be DOING at the concert? Ever read any of the lyrics to the songs? Pretty graphic. Why on earth would youth center endorse something like this and anyone endorse the youth center for having this kind of raunch perform in our area! Seems they could find something better to have money donated from. Staying away from the Surf is going to be the ticket for this one! What next?
I think the Youth Center is going to end up taking a bath on this one. The whole idea of having a concert was to raise money for the youth center. But I think Regan could have found some kind of performer that would have been more family friendly.
The youth center has been declining very badly in the last few years. It seemed like a very vibrant place when it first opened and in the first few years. Regan used to have the choir of kids that would sing athems at various games, even at Hawkeye games. Now it seems it has just become a place for the Detroit and Chicago kids to hang out and most of the parents in Mason City don’t really want their kids hanging with these types of kids.
It also seems that Regan has been too involved in the Foster/Rambo families and I think that has hurt the center also.
Not sure what the answer is, but I don’t think Bow Wow is it.
Yes, putting money into the youth center does seem like it’s benefiting the bad crowds in this town more than doing any good for our area. Too bad too – kids need somewhere to go that is safe and a good influence. I know lots of parents who wouldn’t send their kids there 🙁 It seemed like a good place/idea at one point in time.

I went to Kmart today to specifically get something that was in their ad. When I couldn’t find the item, I also had a hard time finding someone to assist me.
I went to the service desk and showed the picture of the item to the gal at the desk, and she called whoever and said we didn’t get any of those in.
None at all. And she was quite rude about it.
