School board protects logo, raises mileage reimbursement rate

MASON CITY – The Mason City School Board met Tuesday, January 16th.

At the meeting, the board took action to protect the school district athletic logo from unauthorized use, related to licensing and trademark usage.

“We’ve been contacted by the banks, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, several other stores, basically wanting to sell Mohawk gear,” said High School Principal T.J. Jumper.

“This is a way for us to protect our logo and have it protected,” said Superintendant Anita Micich.

Some discussion took place as to what the actual logo for the Mason City schools is.

School Board member Scott Warren asked “What exactly is our mascot?”

“We are called the Mohawks.  We do not have a mascot,” Micich said carefully as some board members chuckled uneasily.

“How many different logos do we have?” another board member asked.

“We use the two, the big ‘MC’ or the one with the arrow,” said Jumper.

“I still got the head,” Warren said, referring to the old Mason City Mohawk logo (pictured) that was used for years before the era of political corectness set in.

“So the indian’s gone,” Warren said.  “We never did have a funeral.”

“He left before I arrived,” Micich said.

An agreement between Mason City Community School District and LRG Prep, LLC was approved.

In other business, the board ok’d a mileage reimbursement increase.  The current rate, 34 cents per mile, is way below the national rate of about 54 cents per mile, it was stated.  The new rate was set at 41 cents per mile and would be retroactive to January 1, 2012.

An annual facilities report was given by Supervisor of Facilities Todd Huff.  He outlined work on roofs and tuck pointing on John Adams Middle School and the High School as well as other projects.

Jumper showed the board new carpet and other surface materials that are going in the remodeled Adams Middle School and High School at this time.
