Girl nearly drowns and boat explodes on Iowa lake

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA – The Iowa DNA and other authorities are investigating two incidents that happened over the weekend at an Iowa lake.

On June 4, 2017, around 3:20 pm, DNR Conservation Officers responded to a tubing incident involving a young girl on Lake Manawa.

A 9-year-old girl fell off or was thrown off while tubing on the lake. The girl was found face down in the water wearing a personal flotation device.

It is believed at some point, while the girl was lying face down in the water, she went into shock. She was transported to a hospital by the Council Bluffs Fire Department. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Later that same day, around 6:50 pm, DNR Conservation Officers, along with the Council Bluffs Fire Department, responded to an explosion on a boat on Lake Manawa.

Four individuals were aboard the boat when the explosion occurred. One victim, Joshua Juranek, 33, of Bellevue, Nebraska, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs and then transported to UNMC in Omaha, where he is currently in critical but stable condition with second-degree burns.

A second victim, Kimberly Red, 33, of Bellevue, Nebraska, was taken to UNMC in Omaha for second-degree burns, but is expected to be released soon.

The incident happened on the northeast part of the lake. After the explosion, the boat was still floating and has been taken by the DNR for evidence processing.

The investigation continues between the Council Bluffs Fire Department and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources law enforcement Conservation Officers.
