MASON CITY — A 77-year-old woman was trapped inside a pickup and injured in a single-vehicle crash near Mason City on November 2, 2026, prompting a rescue by Cerro Gordo County deputies and emergency responders.
Deputies were dispatched at 5:51 p.m. to a report of a vehicle in the ditch near the intersection of Thrush Avenue and 230th Street, according to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived, they found a gray 2023 Ford F-150 resting on its passenger side in the ditch. The driver, Ellen Montgomery, was trapped inside.
Deputies free driver from overturned pickup
Deputies extracted Montgomery from the truck. Emergency medical personnel then helped move her out of the ditch and safely into an ambulance.
Mason City Fire Medics transported Montgomery to MercyOne for treatment of injuries suffered in the collision. The sheriff’s office did not describe the severity of her injuries or provide an update on her condition.
The release did not identify Montgomery’s hometown.
Mason City Fire Department, Nora Springs Fire Department and Action Towing assisted deputies at the scene.
Cause of Thrush Avenue crash under investigation
The sheriff’s office said investigators are still working to determine what caused the pickup to leave the roadway.
The crash occurred on the same road, but at a different intersection, as an October rollover near Thrush Avenue and 280th Street that sent two Mason City residents to the hospital. Authorities attributed that earlier crash to a driver swerving to avoid a deer.
No cause has been announced for Montgomery’s crash.
