CLEAR LAKE — The final concert, the flight and the music that never faded: a November 2 presentation will revisit the 1959 Winter Dance Party and the tragedy that forever connected Clear Lake and the Mason City area to rock ’n’ roll history.

Author and historian Tommy Canale will present “Shadows Over Clear Lake: The Tragic Tale of the 1959 Winter Dance Party” at 6 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Iowa City Municipal Airport, 1801 S. Riverside Drive.

Admission is $10 per person at the door. Seating is limited, and organizers ask attendees to text 702-670-0012 to reserve a seat.

For North Iowa residents and fans of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, the program offers an opportunity to explore the people and circumstances behind a story whose landmarks remain close to home. The presentation takes place in Iowa City, but its subject is rooted in Clear Lake’s Surf Ballroom and the surrounding North Iowa landscape.

From the Surf Ballroom stage to “The Day the Music Died”

Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa… a tourism destination,

Holly, Valens and Richardson performed at the Surf Ballroom on February 2, 1959, during the Winter Dance Party tour. Hours later, all three musicians and pilot Roger Peterson were killed in a plane crash north of Clear Lake on February 3.

The flight departed from Mason City Municipal Airport, tying the Mason City area directly to the tragedy as well as Clear Lake, where the musicians had performed their final show.

The loss became known as “The Day the Music Died,” a phrase that captures the enduring impact of three influential performers dying together at the dawn of rock ’n’ roll.

Canale’s presentation will examine the history surrounding the tour, lesser-known details about the crash and the lasting influence of the musicians and their music, according to the City of Iowa City’s announcement.

The program is a history presentation, with the author discussing the story explored in his book of the same name. The city describes Canale as a researcher, broadcaster, storyteller and speaker whose work brings music history to life.

Clear Lake’s connection reaches beyond the crash

For Clear Lake, the story has continued through concerts, memorials and relationships with the musicians’ families.

One example is Three Stars Plaza near the Surf Ballroom. At its 2011 dedication, family members joined the community to honor Holly, Valens and Richardson with a sculpture inspired by a record-player spindle and three stacked 45 rpm records.

As NIT reported in its coverage of the Three Stars Plaza dedication in Clear Lake, Ritchie Valens’ sisters Connie Valens Lemos and Irma Norton attended alongside Richardson’s son, J.P. Richardson Jr.

The memorial’s construction also carried a local connection. Steve and Vickie Sukup donated labor and materials, and craftsmen at Sukup Manufacturing spent about 10 weeks producing the distinctive sculpture.

Those details help explain why the Winter Dance Party story remains more than a distant chapter in music history for North Iowa. It is also a story about a community’s long commitment to honoring the performers and welcoming the people who loved them.

That commitment was reflected again this year when the Surf announced an August celebration built around life-size bronze statues honoring the three musicians. NIT’s coverage of the Surf Ballroom’s planned statue unveiling and tribute celebration detailed a program combining music, family connections and remembrance.

How to attend “Shadows Over Clear Lake”

The November 2 program gives fans a chance to hear Canale explore the history behind those continuing tributes, from the Winter Dance Party tour to the legacy that has kept the musicians’ names closely associated with Clear Lake for nearly seven decades.

The presentation begins at 6 p.m. at the Iowa City Municipal Airport. Those traveling from Clear Lake or Mason City should note that the host venue is in Iowa City, rather than at the Surf Ballroom or Mason City Municipal Airport.

Reserve seats by texting 702-670-0012. Tickets are $10 per person, payable at the door.

The city’s announcement lists Iowa City Airport Manager Michael Tharp at 319-356-5045 as the event contact.
