CLEAR LAKE — Clear Lake and Garner police are asking North Iowa residents to review home surveillance recordings and help identify a person shown in police-released video as the departments investigate several reports of unlocked vehicles being entered overnight.
The joint public appeal asks residents to check recordings between midnight and 5:30 a.m. for anyone acting suspiciously or checking vehicle doors.
In a follow-up comment, Clear Lake police released video from an incident around 6 a.m. Thursday, October 29, describing the person shown as at least one suspect involved in their investigations. A still image from that video displays a timestamp of October 29, 2026, at 6:04 a.m.
Check cameras—even if nothing appears missing
Police are seeking information from anyone who observed suspicious activity during the overnight hours. Residents with doorbell cameras, driveway cameras or other home surveillance systems may have recorded activity relevant to the investigation.
The original request covers midnight through 5:30 a.m., while the later video update concerns an incident around 6 a.m. Residents reviewing footage should keep both time references in mind.
Save any potentially relevant recordings before they are automatically overwritten. When contacting investigators, provide the recording location, the time displayed and whether the camera’s clock is accurate. Preserve the original video when possible, including footage immediately before and after the activity.
Anyone who recognizes the person in the police-released image should provide that information directly to investigators rather than posting an unverified identification online.
The notice does not specify how many vehicles were involved, which neighborhoods were affected, what property was taken or the total value of any losses. It also does not announce an arrest or charges.
How to contact Clear Lake or Garner police
Residents with information can contact either department:
- Clear Lake Police Department: 641-357-2186.
- Garner Police Department, through Hancock County dispatch for non-emergency calls: 641-923-2621.
- For an emergency or a crime in progress, call 911.
Do not confront someone suspected of entering vehicles. Give dispatchers the location and a description of what you observed.
Vehicle security matters across North Iowa
Entering parked vehicles has prompted other investigations in the region. NIT previously reported on a separate Fort Defiance State Park case in which deputies said a man entered at least three unoccupied vehicles. Authorities in that case reminded residents to keep vehicles, homes and other buildings locked.
An older Mason City case also illustrates what can be lost when belongings remain inside a vehicle. In 2013, NIT reported that a purse containing a handgun, cash and credit cards was stolen from a vehicle at East Park. Police reported no forced entry and believed the vehicle had been unlocked.
These are separate historical cases, included as examples of vehicle-security concerns.
National statistics provide context, not a local crime trend
The FBI’s 2024 national crime estimates showed property crime decreased 8.1 percent from 2023, while larceny-theft decreased 5.5 percent. Those nationwide figures do not establish whether vehicle break-ins are increasing or decreasing in Clear Lake or Garner.
The current police notice provides no local year-to-year totals. A series of overnight reports alone is not enough to calculate a local crime trend.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends closing and locking vehicle windows and doors, taking keys with you, parking in well-lit areas and removing valuables—especially anything visible from outside.
For Clear Lake and Garner residents, the immediate request is straightforward: check your vehicle, review your recordings and contact police with information that could help identify those involved.
