MASON CITY — One Vision is seeking Cerro Gordo County’s support for its Boyer Pool & Wellness Center project in Clear Lake as the organization works toward an end-of-October deadline to begin pursuing a state grant.

County supervisors will consider authorizing a support letter at their Monday, October 26, meeting, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse. The proposed letter includes a financial commitment contingent on One Vision receiving the grant, but leaves the county’s dollar amount blank.

The request comes as One Vision anticipates a separate contribution from the City of Clear Lake. In correspondence included in the supervisors’ meeting packet, Chief Development Officer Janet Johnson said the organization expects city support ranging from $125,000 to $150,000, with the final amount still being worked out.

City support reported; funding amount unsettled

Johnson’s correspondence says the Clear Lake City Council unanimously agreed to support the Boyer Pool & Wellness Center project. One Vision requested $150,000 from the city, and Johnson reported that several council members supported that amount.

The correspondence does not establish a finalized city appropriation.

One Vision now wants the county involved as it pursues funding through the Community Attraction and Tourism program administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.

“Our goal is to submit the CAT Grant Intent to Apply application by the end of this month,” Johnson wrote. “At this stage, we only need a commitment of support from the County to move forward with that submission. The specific dollar amount can be determined later in the process.”

Proposed county letter leaves contribution blank

The proposed letter, included in the packet for Monday’s meeting, expresses support for One Vision’s pursuit of state funding and describes the project as benefiting both Clear Lake and the broader county.

It also contains language committing county money if One Vision receives the CAT grant. The space for that amount has not been filled in.

That leaves a central question for supervisors: whether to offer support now while determining a financial contribution later, or establish an amount as part of their action.

Although the proposed letter is dated October 22, authorization for the chairperson to sign it is on the October 26 agenda. The packet does not establish that supervisors have already approved the letter or committed county funds.

Project details remain to be outlined

The materials provided to supervisors focus on securing local backing for the grant application. They do not include a complete project budget, detailed construction scope, anticipated opening date or breakdown of how much funding would come from private donations, local governments and the state.

Those details will help residents assess what the Boyer Pool & Wellness Center project would provide and how a potential county contribution would fit into its financing.

The request follows the board’s October 19 meeting, when supervisors approved county claims and authorized an agreement with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Monday’s meeting will be held in the Board of Supervisors Conference Room at the courthouse, 220 N. Washington Ave. in Mason City. The agenda includes an opportunity for public comment on agenda items before new business.
