FORT MADISON — An Iowa motorcyclist died Friday morning after a car turning into a private driveway failed to yield, causing a collision on Avenue O, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:14 a.m. October 23, 2026, in the 5000 block of Avenue O in Fort Madison. The motorcyclist was identified as Ian W. Eaves, 39, of Fort Madison.

Eaves was riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson eastbound on Avenue O. Reginald L. Range, 51, of Burlington, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala westbound.

According to the patrol’s preliminary report, Range attempted a left turn into a private driveway and failed to yield to Eaves. The motorcycle struck the Impala in the eastbound lanes, and both vehicles came to rest in the roadway.

Eaves suffered fatal injuries. The report lists the state medical examiner as his destination following the crash.

Range was wearing a seat belt, according to the report. His injury status was not specified.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate, and the preliminary report does not list any charges.

The fatal collision follows other serious motorcycle crashes covered by NIT, including an October crash that seriously injured two Forest City residents.

Iowa’s preliminary traffic fatality count stood at 231 as of October 23, compared with 222 at the same point in 2025, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Reporting delays mean the statewide total may not yet include the Fort Madison crash.
