Visit Mason City posted a 26 second reel in May 2024 called “Top 3 Places To Visit In Mason City,” and the caption under it points viewers to the city’s travel guide. It is the kind of clip that gets a family trip talked about. The catch is that the relatives most likely to come along, the parents who have not been back in years or the grandparents in a town 2 hours away, are often the ones without an Instagram account.

A saved copy of the reel gets around that. A video file plays in a text message, an email or a Facebook message the same way for everyone, with no account needed to watch it.

Why A Link Alone Does Not Always Work

Most older relatives are not on Instagram, and a reel link tends to open into a login screen for anyone without an account. Instagram’s own download option exists, but it only covers part of the job.

The age gap shows up clearly in the Pew Research Center’s 2025 survey of how Americans use social media:

  • 80% of adults aged 18 to 29 use Instagram.
  • 40% of adults aged 50 to 64 use it.
  • Only 19% of adults 65 and older use it.

Instagram added a Download button for public reels in 2023, and it is a fair first thing to try. A few of its limits matter when the video is going to family, though:

  • It covers reels only, not photo posts or stories.
  • The saved video carries an Instagram watermark with the account name.
  • Reels built on songs from Instagram’s licensed music library download without sound.
  • An account can switch the option off for its own reels.

So what can be done when the button is missing, or the sound is gone?

How To Save The Reel With InstaFinsta

How To Save The Reel With InstaFinsta

InstaFinsta is a free website that saves public Instagram reels, photos, carousels and stories from a pasted link. It needs no login and no app, and on the Visit Mason City reel the whole process takes 4 steps.

  1. Open the reel in Instagram, tap the paper plane icon under it and choose Copy Link. The address in the browser bar does the same job when you are on a computer.
  2. Go to insta-finsta.com, paste the link into the box at the top of the page and press Download.
  3. Check the preview before saving anything. For this reel, InstaFinsta flagged that the link looked like a reel rather than a photo, then showed the @visitmasoncityiowa account, the May 20, 2024 post date, the caption and the 26 second video.
  4. Press MP4 to save the video with its sound, or MP3 if only the audio is wanted.

The note in step 3 appears because the link Instagram copies for this post uses the /p/ format meant for photo posts. The site read it correctly anyway, and the video came through as the reel.

What InstaFinsta saves is the file Visit Mason City uploaded, with no watermark added on top. It only works on public accounts, which a tourism board’s account always is, and it never asks for an Instagram login.

The saved MP4 plays in any text thread, email or Facebook message, so relatives can watch the reel without signing up for anything.

The video still belongs to Visit Mason City, so it is best kept to family sharing rather than reposted as someone else’s own content. In case InstaFinsta is down

Send The Travel Guide Along With It

Visit Mason City will mail its free travel guide straight to a friend or relative when someone requests it on their behalf. Pairing the reel with the printed guide turns a 26 second clip into an actual plan.

The 2026 Mason City Travel Guide covers attractions, places to stay, food and events, and a digital copy can be downloaded from visitmasoncityiowa.com. A printed copy can be requested on the same site or by calling the office at 641-422-1663.

Meredith Willson modeled River City in The Music Man on his hometown of Mason City, and one of the show’s best-known numbers is “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” about a whole town waiting for a delivery to roll in. A reel in the family group chat with the guide in the mailbox is a fair modern version of that wagon.

Then send the reel and ask them to treat you to the best food place in town when they come.

The reel has been up since May 2024, and the guide is printed fresh each year. Neither one costs anything to pass along.
