WATERLOO — Afternoon gunfire left a 16-year-old boy dead in Northern Iowa, and police detained another teenager hours later on felony weapons charges as detectives worked to piece together the deadly encounter.

Waterloo police have identified the victim as Lamontrece Deshaun Jordan, 16, of Waterloo. His name was released October 12, four days after the shooting near West 3rd and Baltimore streets.

The emergency began at approximately 4:41 p.m. Thursday, October 8, when Black Hawk County Consolidated Dispatch received multiple reports of shots fired. Callers told dispatchers someone had been hit.

Officers arrived and found a male victim suffering from gunshot injuries. They immediately began lifesaving measures before Waterloo Fire & Rescue personnel took over medical care and transported him to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Authorities sent the victim to the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Teen detained hours after gunfire

At approximately 8:26 p.m. that evening, officers and Violent Crime Apprehension Team detectives detained Jose Kweli Martinez, 16, of Waterloo.

In their October 9 announcement, police said Martinez was being charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a Class C felony, and interference with official acts with a firearm, a Class D felony.

The charges announced in that release were weapons-related offenses. Police did not announce a murder charge against Martinez or describe his alleged actions in detail.

Investigators held the scene overnight, with evidence processing continuing into the morning of October 9. In their October 12 update, police said the homicide investigation remained active and ongoing and declined to release further details.

Another young life lost in Waterloo

The fatal shooting follows another recent homicide investigation covered by NorthIowaToday.com, after a 17-year-old boy was found dead in a brushy area in Waterloo in late September. Police have not announced a connection between that case and the October 8 shooting.

Anyone with information about the October 8 killing is encouraged to contact Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers at 855-300-TIPS or the Waterloo Police Department Detective Division at 319-291-4340, option 3.

Martinez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
