MINNEAPOLIS — President Donald Trump issued a blistering statement Thursday, October 8, 2026, accusing Somali immigrants of fueling disorder in Minnesota and demanding action from state and city leaders, one day after federal authorities announced they had foiled an alleged ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America.
In a Truth Social post Thursday afternoon, Trump declared, “The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants,” alleging violence, murder and mayhem across the state.
“Fight back Minnesota, fight back!” Trump wrote. He added that the federal government would come to the state’s rescue if necessary.
Trump attacked Governor Tim Walz as an “incompetent thief,” an accusation for which he offered no evidence in the post. He also demanded that Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey immediately seek federal assistance.
The broad accusations against Somali immigrants are the president’s claims, not findings established by the Mall of America investigation.
FBI foils alleged Mall of America massacre
Federal prosecutors announced charges against Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, of Richfield, Minnesota, in connection with an alleged plot to shoot dozens of people at the Mall of America in Bloomington. NorthIowaToday.com previously reported the details in FBI foils alleged ISIS mass shooting plot at Mall of America targeting up to 60 people.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Mohamud allegedly discussed killing 30 to 60 people and identified an October 24 Hmong Arts Celebration as a potential target. Prosecutors say he pledged allegiance to ISIS and acquired an inoperable AK-47 rifle, magazines and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI employee on October 6. Agents arrested him shortly afterward.
Mohamud, an American-born U.S. citizen whose parents are from Somalia, faces one federal charge of knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition to commit a federal crime of terrorism. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Northern Iowa travelers have a stake in Twin Cities security
The Mall of America is a familiar destination for residents of Mason City, Clear Lake and communities throughout Northern Iowa who travel to the Twin Cities for shopping and entertainment. The alleged attack plan underscores the importance of federal and local counterterrorism coordination at major public attractions.
Authorities said the operation stopped the alleged plot before anyone was injured. An individual’s alleged actions do not establish wrongdoing by Minnesota’s broader Somali community.
Political tensions sharpen in Minnesota
Trump’s statement adds to political tensions over immigration, public safety and federal authority in Minnesota. Whether his call for federal intervention produces additional action remains unclear.
Federal officials credited the FBI, Joint Terrorism Task Force and Bloomington Police Department for their work on the investigation.
Your kidding right? They aren’t gonna fight back these people think that the Somalia immigrants are great.
