WAVERLY — A disturbing social media post circulated to Waverly-Shell Rock students Sunday evening prompted an investigation involving two law enforcement agencies and school officials, with police identifying a male juvenile as its author and announcing extra patrols for the week.
Waverly police received the report at approximately 7:13 p.m. September 20. Officers worked through the evening with the Waverly-Shell Rock Community School District and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department to determine the post’s origin, intent and legitimacy.
Police said the student identified as the author had no current access to firearms and would not be in school Monday, September 21.
Parents notified as investigators trace post
Superintendent David Hill emailed district parents Sunday night and appeared on KWAY in Waverly Monday morning to share information about the situation.
Authorities have not disclosed the wording of the post, the social media platform involved or the student’s age and identity. The police announcement did not report an arrest or criminal charges.
Police described the message as disturbing but did not publicly detail what investigators had determined about its intent.
Butler County leads continuing investigation
The Butler County Sheriff’s Department will handle the continuing investigation, with Waverly police providing assistance.
Waverly officers also planned extra patrols Monday and throughout the week.
The incident follows other school-threat investigations covered by NIT, including a separate March case in which two juveniles were charged after alleged threats against students and a principal at AC-GC High School.
In the Waverly-Shell Rock case, authorities have announced no charging decision, and the investigation remains ongoing.
