BRITT — Authorities have identified the truck driver killed in a fiery Hancock County crash after his tractor-trailer left the roadway, tore through a fence and slammed into a tree.
The Iowa State Patrol now identifies the victim as Dennis Scott Doocy, 59, of Lone Rock.
NorthIowaToday.com first reported on the deadly crash shortly after it happened August 31, when the driver’s identity had not yet been released.
The crash happened at approximately 1:55 p.m. on James Avenue north of 290th Street in Hancock County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Doocy was driving a 2024 Western Star tractor-trailer northbound on James Avenue when the truck left the roadway to the right.
The semi traveled over a field drive, crashed through a fence and struck a tree.
The truck then became fully engulfed in flames.
Doocy suffered fatal injuries.
Ewing Funeral Home transported him to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
The tractor-trailer was operated by State Line Coop of Burt. The State Patrol reported that no hazardous materials were involved.
Mitch’s Towing removed the wreckage.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Britt Fire Department and West Hancock Ambulance Service assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene.
The State Patrol’s updated report still does not indicate why the truck left the roadway, and no second vehicle was listed as being involved.
The crash remains another deadly entry in what has been a difficult year on Iowa roads.
As of September 2, preliminary Iowa Department of Transportation figures showed 194 traffic fatalities statewide in 2026.
