BRITT — A truck driver was killed Monday afternoon after a tractor-trailer left a rural Hancock County road, crossed a field entrance, crashed through a fence and struck a tree before catching fire.
The fatal crash happened at approximately 1:55 p.m. August 31 on James Avenue north of 290th Street.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2024 Western Star tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on James Avenue when it left the roadway to the right.
The truck continued over a field drive, went through a fence and slammed into a tree.
The tractor-trailer then caught fire.
The driver suffered fatal injuries.
Authorities had not yet released the driver’s name, age or hometown. The State Patrol listed the driver’s identity as withheld in its preliminary crash report.
The deceased was transported by Ewing Funeral Home to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny.
The tractor-trailer was associated with State Line Coop of Burt. Authorities reported that no hazardous materials were involved.
Mitch’s Towing removed the wrecked truck.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Britt Fire Department and West Hancock Ambulance Service assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene.
The preliminary report does not indicate what caused the truck to leave the roadway, and no other vehicle was listed as being involved.
The Hancock County fatality follows another deadly Iowa semi crash reported by NorthIowaToday.com just days earlier.
Iowa had recorded 192 traffic deaths statewide in 2026 as of August 29, according to preliminary state figures. That number may not yet include this Hancock County death or other recently reported fatalities.
