ALGONA — A motor home erupted in flames along the midway at the Kossuth County Fair on Friday, forcing authorities to evacuate the area as firefighters battled thick smoke and flames.
Several 911 calls reporting the fire reached the Kossuth County Law Enforcement Center at approximately 5:27 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2026.
The burning camper was parked along the west side of the midway at the Kossuth County Fairgrounds, where the annual fair was underway.
The Algona Fire Department and Kossuth County EMS were dispatched to the scene. Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the fair also responded and helped evacuate the midway to protect fairgoers.
Authorities identified the camper as a 2005 Holiday Rambler motor home registered to Timothy and Kerissa Hall of Des Moines. The Halls are employed by the midway carnival operating at the fair.
No people were inside the motor home when the fire began. One of the owners was able to rescue a dog before the camper became engulfed in thick smoke and flames.
A family cat did not survive.
Firefighters de-energized the motor home before extinguishing the blaze. Investigators believe the fire began in the rear bedroom and may have originated in a rooftop air-conditioning unit.
The entire interior of the motor home was declared a loss.
The midway reopened after firefighters extinguished the blaze and authorities determined the area was safe.
The fire came just over a week after Kossuth County emergency crews responded to an agricultural aircraft crash west of Algona. The pilot survived that July 29 accident with minor injuries.
The Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at Friday’s fire by the Algona Fire Department, Kossuth County EMS and the Algona Police Department.
