CARPENTER — Wayne Allan Hanson spent more than nine decades rooted in the Iowa countryside, living a life defined by hard work, family and faith. A lifelong farmer with a talent for woodworking and a love of restoring tractors, Hanson died Thursday, July 16, 2026. He was 91.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 21, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church near Carpenter. Visitation took place Monday evening at Hoff Celebrations – Sites Memorial Chapel in Northwood and continued one hour before the funeral service. Burial followed at Deer Creek Lutheran Cemetery.
Wayne was born July 5, 1935, at his family’s home in Deer Creek Township to Carl and Thelma (Rohne) Hanson. As the oldest of six children, he learned the value of hard work at an early age while helping on the family farm. He attended rural Deer Creek Township School before graduating from Carpenter High School, where he enjoyed playing basketball and building lifelong friendships.
On June 30, 1956, he married the love of his life, Shirley Larson, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church. Together they built a life centered on family and farming, raising their children while working the land they loved. Their marriage spanned nearly 70 years and was marked by unwavering devotion and partnership.
Wayne dedicated his life to agriculture, spending decades farming in Worth County. Even beyond the fields, he enjoyed working with his hands. He was well known for woodworking projects, restoring antique tractors and finding satisfaction in repairing and building things. Whether in the workshop or outdoors, Wayne appreciated simple pleasures and the satisfaction of a job done well.
Faith remained an important part of his life. As a longtime member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church, he supported his church and community while passing along the values of honesty, humility and perseverance to future generations.
More than anything, Wayne treasured time spent with his family. Holidays, family gatherings and everyday visits were among the moments he cherished most, and his quiet strength, steady presence and generous spirit left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley; his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, along with many friends and neighbors whose lives he touched over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents and family members who welcomed him into eternal rest.
