MASON CITY — Mason City artist Dan Gamble has earned Best in Show honors in the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum’s Area Show: 50, a competitive exhibition featuring artists from across North Central Iowa and Southern Minnesota.
Gamble received the top award for his egg tempera on panel work, Untitled (Diptych). As Best in Show winner, he will be granted a solo exhibition at the museum in 2027.
The exhibition includes artwork created by people above high school age who live within 100 miles of Mason City. Artists competed for $1,000 in cash awards and the opportunity to receive a solo exhibition.
Three artists received $250 Excellence Awards.
Larry Gregson of Mason City was honored for Bosveld’s Odtaa Number 7, an oil work on herringbone linen.
Susan E. Kuennen of Elgin received an Excellence Award for Amethyst and Jade, a willow and reed basket incorporating deer antler.
Janet Kostka of Mason City was recognized for Dahlia from Lorrie on My Birthday, an acrylic painting.
Two $100 Merit Awards were also presented.
Mary Ann Marreel of Osage received a Merit Award for The Shepherd, a charcoal drawing.
Yvonne C. Cory of Easton, Minnesota, was honored for Rebirth of Family Mementoes, a textile art apron.
The $50 Most Daring Award went to Frida Figueroa of Waverly for Mitos de la Historia, an oil painting on canvas.
Five artists received Honorable Mention awards.
Tracy Ingham of Rockford was recognized for Walking The Dog, an acrylic painting.
Jefferson Brown of Mason City received an award for The Bear, also an acrylic painting.
TC Dakin of Kensett was honored for Horse/Strength, a stained-glass piece.
Julie Hughes of Cedar Falls received recognition for Quiet Watch, a mixed-media work.
Dean Swenson of Buffalo Center was honored for The Hermit, an acrylic painting.
This year’s competition drew 114 entries from 62 artists. The final exhibition includes 36 works created by 35 artists.
The juror for Area Show: 50 is Kong Ho, associate professor of art at North Iowa Area Community College.
Many of the artworks are available for purchase through the museum.
The exhibition is sponsored by the David & Phyllis Murphy Charitable Foundation and will remain on display in the Kinney-Lindstrom Gallery through Sept. 23, 2026.
Admission is free and open to the public.
