Minnesota truck driver strikes, kills pedestrian walking on Iowa interstate

POWESHIEK COUNTY — A pedestrian was killed early Friday morning after walking into the roadway on an Iowa Interstate highway, where he was struck by a semi driven by a Minnesota man.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened at about 1:37 AM on July 10, 2026, on eastbound Interstate 80 near mile marker 198 in Poweshiek County.

A 2019 Freightliner Cascadia driven by Jama Jama, 33, of Fridley, Minnesota, was traveling eastbound on I-80 when the deadly collision occurred.

The patrol said its preliminary investigation shows a male pedestrian walked into the roadway and was struck by the semi.

The pedestrian’s name was withheld in the initial crash report. He was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office by Holland Funeral.

The semi was operated by Macow Transport LLC of Burnsville, Minnesota. The report said no hazardous materials were involved.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Sgt. Nowak investigated the crash. Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Brooklyn Fire, Iowa DOT and Poweshiek County EMS assisted at the scene.

According to the Iowa DOT, 148 people had died on Iowa roads so far in 2026 as of Friday, July 10.
