ORAN — Two drivers were seriously injured Monday morning after a two-vehicle crash at a rural Fayette County intersection north of Oran.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received multiple 911 calls at approximately 10:31 AM on July 6, 2026, reporting a collision at the intersection of 60th Street and Y Avenue, about two miles north of Oran.
Investigators determined that Kayla Marie Scheffert, 34, of Sumner, was eastbound on 60th Street in a white 2023 Toyota Camry SE when Britney Ann Lawrence, 35, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was northbound on Y Avenue in a maroon 2013 Kia Sorento.
Authorities said Lawrence failed to yield at the intersection and struck Scheffert’s vehicle in a T-bone crash. Both vehicles rolled into the northeast ditch and were considered total losses.
Scheffert became trapped in the Toyota and had to be mechanically extracted. She suffered serious injuries and later sought medical treatment by personal vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
Lawrence was also temporarily trapped in the Kia and was helped out of the vehicle. She suffered serious injuries and was transported to Sumner Hospital.
Lawrence was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Oran Fire Department, Oran First Responders, Fairbank Ambulance, MercyOne Ambulance, Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, Bremer County Emergency Management and the Iowa State Patrol.
