IOWA CITY — A pedestrian was killed early Saturday, July 5, 2026, after being struck by two vehicles while standing in the travel portion of Interstate 80 in Johnson County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The fatal crash happened at about 1:05 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 near mile marker 245.
According to the crash report, 28-year-old Yanelli J. Camarena was standing in the travel portion of the interstate when Camarena was struck by a 2026 Freightliner tractor-trailer and then by a 2025 Buick Enclave.
Camarena suffered fatal injuries. The report lists transport to UIHC by the Johnson County Medical Examiner.
The semi was driven by Terry L. Evearitt, 80, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Buick was driven by Macey M. Rogers, 25, of Muscatine. The State Patrol report did not list injuries for either driver.
The tractor-trailer was operated by XPO Logistics Freight Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan, according to motor carrier information listed in the crash report.
Both vehicles were towed by Holiday Towing.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. The agency was assisted at the scene by the Iowa City Police Department, Iowa City Fire Department and Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
