The State Library of Iowa announced June 29, 2026, that Mason City Public Library met the requirements for accreditation under “In Service to Iowa: Public Library Standards Sixth Edition.”
The accreditation period begins July 1, 2026, and runs through June 30, 2029.
State accreditation requires libraries to meet standards across several areas of operation, including governance and funding, staffing, collections, services, public relations, access and facilities.
“This achievement reflects the Mason City Public Library’s dedication to providing exceptional service and resources to its community,” said State Librarian Brenda Hall. “Accreditation is a testament to the library’s commitment to meeting the highest standards in library service and continuing to grow and adapt to the needs of Iowans.”
The Mason City Public Library is one of 416 accredited public libraries in Iowa. The state has 543 public libraries overall.
Accredited libraries are recognized by the State Library for being responsive to local needs and for meeting standards tied to library services, public access and community support.
The designation also carries financial benefits. Accredited libraries receive a higher rate of compensation through the State Library’s Enrich Iowa program, which supports public library services across the state.
The Mason City Public Library will also receive a Certificate of Accreditation signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer, State Librarian Brenda Hall and Iowa Department of Administrative Services Director Mark Campbell.
State officials said Iowa libraries continue to play an important role in workforce development, economic development, lifelong learning and access to government services. Iowans use public libraries to search for jobs, complete homework, find books, research legal and government information, and access online resources.
Nearly two-thirds of Iowans have active public library cards, according to the State Library.
