WATERLOO – A 22-year-old Iowa woman has died after a two-vehicle crash Monday morning on Sergeant Road in Black Hawk County, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The crash happened at 11:02 a.m. on May 18, 2026, on Sergeant Road south of Ranchero Road.
According to the crash report, Kiersten Ann Ryherd, 22, of Cherokee, Iowa, was driving a 2014 Jeep Compass southbound on Sergeant Road when the vehicle collided with a northbound 2014 Chevrolet C45 driven by Cory Dale Brown, 50, of West Des Moines.
The Iowa State Patrol said the vehicles collided for an undetermined reason.
Ryherd was transported by Waterloo EMS to MercyOne Waterloo with critical injuries. The report lists her injury as fatal. Authorities said she was wearing a seat belt.
Brown was transported by Waterloo EMS to Allen Hospital with minor injuries. The report said Brown was also wearing a seat belt, and that the seat belt was credited with saving his life.
The Chevrolet C45 was listed in the report with motor carrier information for UnityPoint at Home of Urbandale. The report also indicated hazardous materials were involved.
Both vehicles were towed by Rasmusson Towing.
The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol. Waterloo police, EMS, fire personnel, and Rasmusson Towing and Recovery assisted at the scene.
