CLARKSVILLE — A Clarksville man was injured Sunday morning after his vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the Shell Rock River.

According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 10:12 a.m. on April 12, 2026. Authorities state that 45-year-old Adam C. Averhoff was traveling northbound on Highway 188 in a 2023 Toyota sedan.

For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway just north of 195th Street and entered the river. Averhoff was able to successfully exit the submerged vehicle on his own.

Averhoff, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was treated at the scene before being transported by Clarksville EMS to UnityPoint Health for his injuries. Officials noted that the seatbelt was a significant factor in preventing more serious harm.

The recovery of the vehicle required an extensive multi-agency response. The Iowa Dive Team and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) assisted local crews, including the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Clarksville Police, Clarksville Fire, and Butler County EMA.

McDivitt’s Towing was called to the scene to remove the vehicle from the river. At this time, investigators believe no other individuals or vehicles were involved in the incident.
