Loretta Mae Satern, 86, passed away while under hospice care at Westhaven Community in Boone, Iowa, following a brief illness.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City, Iowa, with Mark Doebel officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 PM.
In honor of Loretta’s deep love for animals, memorials may be directed to Furball Farm Cat Sanctuary in Faribault, Minnesota.
Loretta was born on November 23, 1939, in Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Evelyn (Kach) Lewis. She grew up in northern Iowa and graduated from McIntire High School. It was during her high school years that she met Gary Satern, the love of her life. The two were married on May 26, 1957, and shared nearly a lifetime together. They were blessed with two children and made their home in Mason City beginning in 1961.
In 1969, Loretta became one of the first women to work at McDonald’s, where she dedicated 33 years of service before retiring.
Loretta was known for her kind and gentle spirit and was one of the sweetest people you could ever meet. Anyone who knew her loved her. She had a huge heart, especially for animals, and cherished the many dogs and cats she and Gary shared throughout the years. Loretta also enjoyed traveling and collected lighthouses from her trips. Most importantly, she treasured her family. She loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother and affectionately called her grandchildren her “little sweeties.”
Those left to cherish memories of Loretta are her husband of 68 years, Gary; children, Gene (Jody) Satern and Deanna (Robert) Nost; grandchildren Jonathan (Argelia) Satern, Lindsey (Matt) McGuire, Natalie (Dustin) Lynch, Nicole (Matt) Reinken; 9 great grandchildren; brother, Gary (Jan) Lewis; her kitty, Pollyanna; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Loretta is preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Maynard and Wilma Satern; as well as numerous fur babies over the years.
